If you want a free solution for your pc just follow these steps

> avast free 6.0
> malwarebytes (without real time protection enabled) update and scan your pc once a month
> ccleaner use it to remove all the temporary files (once a day before shutting your pc down)
> panda url filter (it will help you to not open risky websites)
> AVG Anti-Rootkit Free (scan your pc once a month)

if you will follow these steps your PC will live its life and you will not have to format your PC again and again also these are all free products to use .

My last thought -> please do not use torrent , warez etc or your pc will get infected easily and no anti-virus will help you.

hope you like my reviews !

Avast 6 Free is a very good product , very light on the system resources , userfriendly and with a lot of layers of protection.
The main downsides could arise in my opinion from the zero day prevention capabilities, as proven in the AV-Comparatives tests Retrospective Test and Whole Product Dynamic "Real World" Test where this product finished on the last places.
On paper everything looks great however Avast could improve in version 7 the way their zero day malware prevention shields work, a more reactive behavior blocker and maybe the auto-sandbox could also be triggered not just by the heuristic engine but also by a low reputation level in the avast community nevertheless great antivirus engine and webguard.

Just as you say avast need improved zero-day malware protection; the features are there.

On the upcoming version of Avast (7) which is already undergoing beta version. Expect that improvements for Sandbox and Behavior Blocker will be full blown.
