Good idea, all trial software that has freeware version should have this option. It saves a lot of time than having to uninstall and reinstall software.

I've tried the avg Downgrader and it either does nothing or shows another window and a continue button which also does nothing. What now?

Manually uninstall current version from your system with the included uninstaller on Control Panel- Program and Features, download the correct version of AVG Removal Tool and run it. Reboot your system and download the version that you want from AVG and install it.
