Avira Free Security is a free all-in-one security solution developed by the German cybersecurity company Avira. It combines antivirus protection with additional tools designed to improve online security, privacy, and system performance.
The software includes real-time malware protection, a security extension for web browsers, a password manager, a limited VPN, and system optimization tools. On Windows, it also provides a software updater to help keep applications and drivers up to date.
Company History: On January 8, 2021, NortonLifeLock completed its acquisition of Avira for approximately $360 million. On November 4, 2022, NortonLifeLock launched Gen Digital following its combination with Avast, bringing Avira under the Gen family of cybersecurity brands.
Let's find out!
Interface :
Avira hasn't updated its interface in a few years. It remains simple but is also part of the Gen Digital ecosystem (which is full of ads for the paid version—a bit pushy...).
Avira still offers its Safe Shopping extension, which is supposed to protect us from malicious websites.
The software remains fairly lightweight.
Malware URL : 5/9
A fairly average score; some infections go undetected.
Surprisingly, Avira occasionally displays names that belong to Avast (such as Evo, for example...).
The extension didn't block any websites!
Fake crack : 1/1
The dropper is not blocked (SFX archive) because it is password-protected.
When executed, Avira blocks all executions. (3 in total)
Malware Pack : 29 out of 84 threats remain
Mixed results. Even though Avira performed well (thanks to Sentry and its database), too many infections and attacks slip through the cracks.
And that's a shame, because Avira has done better in the past!
Sentry is certainly making an effort, but it's not enough yet.
Final scan :
Avira : 0
KVRT : 7 (Memory Infected)
Symantec : 5
Final opinion:
Avira offers very average protection, but let's face it: Avira's glory days are, unfortunately, long gone...
Even though Sentry is trying hard, I've noticed a decline in the antimalware engine, combined with Avast-style names (like Evo or MalwareX) and a completely abandoned extension.
Wake up, Avira! This is just too average.
