Avira is a German security solutions provider well known to the general public, but acquired by Norton in 2021 to form Gen Digital Inc (with Norton, Avast/AVG).
Since then, the company has kept its brand and its engine, but has completely rethought the software in terms of design and identity.
Let's take a look.
User interface :
Avira's interface, even though it belongs to the same group as Avast, doesn't resemble it, and that's just as well!
It's sober and relatively simple.
However, Avira does behave in the same way as Avast, creating unnecessary alerts (e.g. to clean up temporary files), but this is still not too disturbing.
RAM consumption is low, but nothing to worry about.
Web protection: 12/12
Avira blocks all malicious links.
Fake crack : 1/1
Blocked by Avira (HEUR/APC)
Malware Pack : Remaining 42 files out of 179.
During access, Avira blocks a few more samples thanks to the Cloud, bringing the score to 42 (previously 68).
At runtime, I was very surprised. Surprised that Avira had FINALLY improved on what I'd been hoping for: blocking unknown malware and blocking Payloads at source via scripts!
And Avira does it very well! It avoided several traps I set for it during the test.
Nevertheless, the anti-malware engine seems to be regressing in favor of the Cloud, caution Avira....
The machine copes very well, with a few traces but easily removable. Congratulations!
Final scan :
Avira : 4
NPE : 4
Malwarebytes : 11
KVRT : 3
Final opinion:
Avira is an antivirus that has evolved and progressed.
It has corrected the shortcomings I pointed out 1 year ago. The publisher seems to be listening to testers' comments, and that's appreciated.
1 piece of malware has been completely eliminated (NetSupport) and the rest are residuals that can be easily removed.
Nevertheless, the anti-malware engine seems to be regressing in favor of the Cloud, caution Avira....
Congratulations Avira, it's highly recommendable!
