I have always had performance issues on my low-end laptop (core i3, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Windows 8.1).
As a heavy browser (+20 tabs on two browsers at any given moment), I've always blamed my laptop "freezes" on high RAM usage, I was wrong. Even with 30 or 40 tabs, RAM usage is rarely above 60 or 70%, while I have recurrent 100% disk usage peaks (especially after boot-ups).
My real-time AV is Avast Internet Security with hardened aggressive mode enabled, whenever I have a slowdown, I see Avast processes causing 100% disk usage. I've just disabled hardened aggressive mode, and it looks like things are a little better now.
I've looked it up on Google, I found many lists of AVs ranked by RAM usage, but only a few topics with conflicting feedback about disk usage. Some said WD had a very low disk usage, others claimed Bitdefender, Avast, Avira, Webroot, Norton, NOD32 etc. had a low disk usage.
How does Avast compare to other AVs in disk usage department? Was the hardened aggressive mode the cause
of high disk usage? And if so, is Avast without hardened aggressive mode worth it? What's the internet security solution with the lightest disk usage?
