Late in January, Bank of America (BoA) announced that it would soon be dropping support for its apps on Windows devices. No specific reason was revealed but the store listing was updated to state that "we'll no long support this app for this device. We're sorry for the inconvenience. You can access mobile banking with us through your browser. Just go to www.bankofamerica.com."
Today, the inevitable has finally happened and BoA has flipped the kill switch for its app on Windows devices. The app has been unpublished from both the Windows Store and the Windows Phone Store. Moreover, opening the previously installed app on a Windows Phone results in the following error message:
We no longer support the app and you may not have browser access to bankofamerica.com for this device. But you can access online banking through your laptop or desktop browser or mobile operating system. Just go to bankofamerica.com for a list of browsers and supported operating systems.
Frustratingly, some users apparently can't navigate past the login page on the mobile version of the bank's website through their Windows Phone's browser as well, adding that Windows is not a "supported operating system."
Bank of America was a relatively early arrival to the Windows Phone platform - its app first rolled out in 2011, just a few months after the first WP7 handsets went on sale. It is truly odd that BoA has decided to drop its support for Windows after almost four years, especially with Windows 10 on the horizon for both phones and PCs.
