how does an home owner pc user protect from this malware
The only effective way to block this 100% is to watch your own actions.

1. Never download or run suspicious files from unknown sources.
2. When you download a file never select to "run", always "save" file and upload it to VirusTotal to check it.
3. Pay attention to UAC prompts when running files, never approve anything that you have not verified to be safe. If the file doesn't not have a digital certificate, that is the first sign something may be wrong. UAC will always let you know if the digital certificate is valid, if is expired that always indicates something maybe wrong.

There is no security products or combo of products will offer 100% protection.
Your mouse clicks matter.

Enjoy!! :D
