According to recent media reports researchers and scientists hailing from the prestigious German institution, “Aachen University’s Media Computing group” have conceived an extremely unique computing concept. The German boffins have created a one of its kind computer workstation known as the “BendDesk”.
The innovative BendDesk is basically a working prototype of a large desk that manages to successfully combine its vertical and horizontal surface and transform it into one big multi-touch display computer. The workspace can be used to display several types of digital content such as photos, videos or documents. BendDesk’s display is curved towards its center which allows for seamless integration between all areas resulting in the user interface being presented all over the surface of the multi-touch computer. BendDesk uses infrared emitters to locate the user’s movement over the length and breadth of its entire surface. The device performs the role of a graphical user interface by combining two short throw projectors which are located inside the desk’s wooden frame. Users can also occasionally place several types of other objects on the desk’s smooth flat surface like paper documents, pens and even steaming hot mugs of coffee without damaging the computer. It seems that the makers of BendDesk wanted to create a standard workstation environment which can support interaction with digital documents as well as perform the full functionality of traditional desks.
