Best Antivirus - Avira and Norton, according to AV Labs

According to AV-Comparatives, Avira is the top antivirus product of 2016, breaking Kaspersky and Bitdefender's long rivalry streak.

Norton got top score for AV-Test, taking the throne from Bitdefender.

Interpret these results as you will; we will never know if the results are unbiased.

The two major independent antivirus testing houses have completed their assessments of the best antivirus products for 2016, and the results are in: Norton by Symantec came out on top in one test, and Avira in the other.

AV-Comparatives released its best antimalware product of 2016 on Tuesday, after AV-Test announced its choice last week. There was the usual dash of controversy, however, as Symantec again declined to submit its Norton product to AV-Comparatives for testing.

Otherwise, the winners were clear: AV-Test anointed Norton Security 2016 as providing the best Protection of all consumer antimalware products it tested during 2016. AV-Comparatives named Avira Antivirus Pro 2016 as its best antimalware product of 2016, narrowly edging out Bitdefender and Kaspersky.

The chart on the website seems a little confusing to me. Are they testing a certain category during a different month. Also even though WD did "bad" on the test doesn't mean it is terrible overall. If you aren't click happy and backup your data, any tool your given no matter what the test says is better than no protection at all.

I agree! I really believe that WD, SmartScreen, and USC are enough with common sense and are enhanced by an anti-exe or companion antivirus.

Why this matters: No average user wants to venture into the dark recesses of the Web, let alone try to capture the malware that lurks there for product testing.Specialized testing houses do do this, however, with the idea that testing a PC’s defenses is better done in the laboratory than on your machine.

Though it selected Avira as Product of the Year, Bitdefender and Kaspersky Lab scored so highly that AV-Comparatives created a new category, Outstanding Products 2016, to honor the other two.

Honor or keep them Well in any event this will surely help the average user make a decision.

As usual it can be debated how much we can trust these results...for the 0-day detection I definitely trust more the tests done in the HUB!

I understand the new "Outstanding" award that way: when there is a tie, the product which has won least recently or never wins. The other products who were on par with it receive the "Outstanding" award. And then there is the ""Top rated" award which i doesn't really understand how it is given.

Maybe noone of the testers uses Avira. Though anyone of them can simply clone their VM and install Avira.
