While many people use password managers for the convenience of remembering a single login, the master password, the primary advantage that such programs offer, is that they provide an easy way to create unique passwords. Bitwarden is taking it to the next level, the open source password manager now has an option to generate unique usernames.

Bitwarden Password Manager can now generate unique usernames
It is intriguing to say the least, and was a highly requested feature by the community. Having unique usernames can protect your privacy, and minimize the impact of identity theft. The feature was released for the web vault a few days ago, before it was added to the browser extension, and the desktop programs.

Note: The Bitwarden extension has not been updated to 1.58.0 on Mozilla Firefox's AMO, Google's Chrome Web store, Edge Add-ons, etc, at the time of writing this article. It is expected to be available shortly. The new version of the extension, v1.58.0, also fixes an issue related to importing notes and URLs in macOS and Safari.

We need for this new feature, Bitwarden browser extension version 1.58.0 that's already available on Chrome web store:

Unfortunately, we have to wait on Microsoft addons, for now it's only older version 1.57.0

Just install the Chrome one, works perfect in Edge.

Exactly. I am not in any rush for it so I am ok with waiting. Not sure if I would use that feature anyway.

Bitwarden blog post:
Passwords get all the attention. And naturally so - they’re ubiquitous in securing most of our digital world. They guard our online accounts, but are susceptible to compromise by hackers if improperly secured. They’re easy to use, but render us frustrated if lost or forgotten. Like it or not, passwords remain significant.

It’s no wonder the username ends up with little time on the digital stage. That’s changing - Bitwarden has just released a username generator to help you create secure and unique usernames for all your accounts and save them in a Bitwarden vault. Why? Because usernames aren’t simply your password’s sidekick, an underdeveloped afterthought. They play an equally important role in your digital life and deserve just as much attention and care as your passwords. Here’s how.

Nice! About time right?
Yes, hopefully this a good reason and not an excuse:
Officially our SLA is seven business days, although it can often take longer since we manually verify that each extension submission doesn't contain anything malicious: Publish a Microsoft Edge extension - Microsoft Edge Development
If they indeed verify every extension manually, that would be a great reason to stick to the Microsoft Edge Add-ons for extensions on Edge and not use the ones from other stores.

Bitwarden's username generator now supports SimpleLogin, AnonAddy, and Firefox Relay email alias services

What's new in Bitwarden 2022.05.0 Update

Bitwarden now supports SimpleLogin, AnonAddy, and Firefox Relay for generating usernames. Users can take advantage of the email forwarding services to protect their privacy. So now the usernames that it generates are not only unique, but also mask the real email address to prevent it from being leaked in data breaches.

Note: The latest version of the Bitwarden extensions for Firefox, Chrome, Edge, are not yet available on the stores, at the time of writing this post.

The announcement article on the company's blog illustrates how to use email aliases in Bitwarden. The username generator will allow users to select one of the three mail forwarding services. You will need to have an account with one of the services, and provide the API Key for your account in order for Bitwarden to register the created email alias with it. The password manager previously added the option to allow people to use plus email addresses, like example+notmyrealid@simplelogin.io. If your provider supports a catch-all inbox, you can use that too.

The email alias feature is available in the Desktop apps and the browser add-ons. The Web Vault will also support the services at launch, except for Firefox Relay, which will be added in the future. The best part of course is that the email aliases for the username generator is available for all plans, i.e. free and paid users can make use of it.
