That Norton scored #1 -- and it wasn't even close -- does not surprise me at all.

If anybody goes back and does a compilation of all the professional AV tests of 2019, by AVLab, AV-Test, AV-C, SE Labs, MRG.... Norton wins. Out of the box, it is the superior capability. Yes, contrary to the prevailing winds around here -- it is holistically better than Kaspersky.

Disclaimer--
Of course this is at default settings -- and when you hang out here at MT... you add other products and make tweaks which change your security effectiveness profile overall. So having the best AV at default settings is not really a meaningful standard applicable to this crowd.

The problem with Norton is the future... they may be sold and then who knows what will happen to the product..

Indeed the methodology might be biased in a way that favors Norton, but I used Norton quite a bit last year and it has been fast and light!

As the OP said, the worry is Norton's future. NortonLifelock is laying off and downscaling left and right, and Symantec being engulfed by Broadcom and then spit out is not a good sign either -- can't think of a single tech company that Broadcom acquired and sold actually turning out for the better.

It's no reason to avoid Norton at the moment but I probably wouldn't commit for longer than a year at a time.
