Finding the hardware's limits is the first thing I do.

Just a step I have taken since the early 90's and it's a healthy
one so I have not changed my approach. It allows me to get to know
the boards ticks and quirks before I start to tweak it

Ah, I see. Not a bad idea.

But then I'd have to rebuild/reinstall everything after three months. (I test to failure, so stuff will be at risk.)
