If you are using Bitdefender 2013 (Antivirus Plus, Internet Security, Total Security) you can upgrade, free of charge, to the Bitdefender 2014 version by:

1. Installing it directly over the older version with the installer provided. During the installation process you will receive a notification informing you that a previous version was detected. Click Yes to uninstall it, reboot the computer, then proceed the installation.
If the older version was registered, Bitdefender 2014 will "remember" the respective license key.

2. Removing the older version, restarting your computer and installing the new version. The product settings of your previous version will not be saved. Please use this upgrade method only if the first option fails.

PSA: Be very careful not to select the hard-to-see auto-renewal option which is turned on by default or otherwise Bitdefender will charge you 49.99USD in a year without any notice whatsoever. Read up about it in their forums, they're filled with complaints about this shady practice.
