It is to protect you from 'nosy observers' who can see where you are surfing to and everything you do online, especially when hackers mount a man-in-the-middle attack. It also stops the site from seeing what your ip address is, so they can't track you. There are ad's which marks down who the visitors are and track them across sites; where ever they can place a ad. By turning the VPN off then on, you change your ip address that he ad's see. A VPN is more about preserving privacy than anything else.
