from the moment in which there are threats to these systems they need to be protected .
the big question is if you can use the system without putting at risk, if so, well, then you should not need an antivirus.
Now if you can not for you detect threats and defend yourself, you should use another protection an AV protection.

Most definitely they need AVs, although they do not have malware that are as prevalent as windows malware, linux and mac malware are normally more complex because of the amount of code needed to breach the respective systems.

Every computer system ever made, regardless of OS, can be breached. That is the simple fact. Windows OSes are by far the most targeted because of its sheer prevalence in the OS space. Linux and Macs mostly fly under the radar of malware writers, currently, because as a percentage of the overall OS market they are a small niche. When/if that dynamic ever shifts with increased market share=greater numbers of users, malware writers now driven by profit(s) will respond accordingly.

For proper disinfection process of viruses on USB or HDD then you need an antivirus/ at least scanner for Linux or Mac, you may not experience any targets on those environment due to small scale audiences however you have at least protection even a tiny extension for blocking web based threats is fine.

Any AV may do as long you can proper configure through those commandline for such operations even some contains GUI.

Long time Linux user here. Linux does not need any Antivirus and a basic firewall (UFW) is enough for home users. If you are using Linux in a server then you have to go for some advanced firewall.

This is what I like the most about Linux. It doesn't need any AV so no need to worry about virus & stuff and the other thing is that the computer (even with minimal config.) runs fast as it does not have any security software clogging up the resources. :D
