First of all hello all. I am new to the forums and I found out about them in a search to remove the S.M.A.R.T hdd troyan. I managed to do it with the advice from this site and it was extremely helpfull and easy to understand even for a an inexperienced user as myself.
After I finished removing this troyan (that really made me wanting to find the person that made it and have a small talk with him) I looked up some tips in your forums in order to be able to create some basic protection for my pc. I just use it for surfing and streaming some episodes of my favourite TV shows. I don't downloading stuff and I have a router. My knowledge in computing is none compared to all of you us I understood from the talk in the forums so I was wondering if somebody could give me some advise for some free programs to help me build a basic protection for my pc. Sorry for the long talk and I hope I didn't waste your time. Thanks in advance.

RE: Need help building some protection for my pc

Hello Dredon,
Real-time protection
While AVG 2012 Free is not a bad product when compared with Avast 7 Free lacks some modern prevention layers like file reputation scan and auto-sandbox , which can save you from an infection.
I would suggest that you replace AVG Free with Avast 7 Free.
Comodo Internet Security Free it's also a very good option however this security product can generate pop-ups sometimes so if don't want to get more involved in your computer security then you can skip this option.

It's important to know that most infection rely strongly on social engineering, basically you'll need to run them so that they can work... if you practice a smart online behavior then you should really decrees your chances of getting infected. You can read some tips on how to avoid infections here: http://malwaretips.com/Thread-5-easy-tips-to-avoid-infections

Browser protection
While Internet Explorer it's a decent browser , I would suggest that you consider changing it to Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as IE is a very targeted browser by cyber criminals.
If I were you , I would chose Google Chrome as this browser has a very strong guard against malicious links/downloads and has embedded a lot of security features.
As good as a browser is , you'll need some plugins to improve protection:

Web of trust - site advisor
WOT (Free) - link
To help you avoid malicious sites you can use Web of Trust (WOT) a website rating browser plugin. After you add it to your browser make sure you only visit websites rated "Green" by WOT

Adblocker - an adblocker
For Firefox
Adblock Plus (Free) - link
Adblock is a content-filtering extension for Mozilla Firefox- and Mozilla Application Suite-based web browsers. Adblock allows users to prevent page elements, such as advertisements, from being downloaded and displayed.
For Chrome
Adblock Plus for Google Chrome (Free) - link
Adblock Plus for Google Chrome is a content-filtering extension for Google Chrome. Adblock allows users to prevent page elements, such as advertisements, from being downloaded and displayed.

I can recommend more addons however I need to know if you changed you browser or not :)

On demand scanners

You should always upload all your downloads on virustotal.com and perform a scan with your on-demand to be checked for malware!

VTUploader (Free) - link
To upload a file to VirusTotal, you can visit the main analysis site, click the Browse button to select a file from your hard drive, and then click the Send file button. You can make this process even easier with the free VirusTotal Uploader utility. After installing it, you can simply right-click any file under 20MB and choose "VirusTotal" from the Send To Windows menu. The scan results will display in your browser as usual.

Hitman Pro (Trial) - link
An on-demand scanner using multiple anti-malware engines and cloud technology. It offers unlimited free scanning but once you use it to remove detected malware it switches to a 30-day trial version. I recommend using it after you've scanned your hard-drive with the other products you have installed

Virtualization:
Even if you submitted a file to virustotal.com and it said that it's clean , you'll need to run it in virtual environment because sometimes infection can be so new that security vendors don't have signs for it.

Virtualization software will allow you to browse the web or run another application in a completely safe environment. This is especially useful when visiting high-risk web sites, whether accidentally or deliberately, as the Web browser will be completely contained within the virtual enviroment, preventing any damage to your computer.
A sandbox can also be used to run any other applications which you think may be suspect - you can run the program inside the sandbox to determine whether or not it is safe while remaining completely protected against any malicious actions that it may try to carry out.
I strongly advise you to install Sandboxie and use it for when you're browsing the Internet or running shady/unknown programs(not that you should do that but... :) ) . Alternately you can try BufferZone PRO (Free) , another great virtualization software.
Sandboxie (Free/Paid) - link
Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer.

Always run suspicious of freshly downloaded files in a Sandboxie to verify that he download isn't compromised!Sandboxie will replicate perfectly your operating system so all the files should run without any problems in it.

Which Service Pack of Windows Vista are you using? To find out, Open the Start Menu and Right-Click on Computer and then Click on Properties. That will show you a Window giving some basic info about your PC and OS. Under 2 lines from the name of your OS, is there is anything about the Service Pack written?

Good choice browser, as IE9 provide security from SmartScreen Filter and you can add a filter from Tracking Protection built in.

Have you noticed he is using AVG Free 2011. Please upgrade to AVG 2012. You can use AVG 2012+Comodo Free firewall or AVG FREE 2012+Online Armor firewall.
Or as i see you got infected with a pretty bad trojan and you are not an expert so I would recommend buying a full suite like Kaspersky InternetSecurity or Norton or AVG internet security. If you are from USA check newegg.com they have great deals. You would be better of with a full suite rather than layered protection approach. Also install a backup software as McLovin said.
You are good to go.

First of all thank you all for your help. I will try your suggestions and I will contact again to say how it is going. And sorry for not introducing myself Malbky. I am from Greece so it is a bit hard for my are to find good software products but thanks for the advice anyway. As for my luck of knowledge in computing, I work in a telephone company so except the daily use of one for the programs in the company and some lessons I got at a very young age (18 I am 33 and have forgoten most of it as I didn't use them), so I am mostly rely on tips from internet in mostly everything I need to do in my pc. Most of my time is spent on my job and Diving (my other job). So any tips would be apreciated though I can understand if you wouldn't have time for a reply as my subjects would be most times be a little stupid due to my luck of knowledge. But really thank you all for the replies.

No problem. :) Just edit your first post to mention that you're using SP2.

I would advise you to visit the following link and add Fanboy Tracking List and Fanboy Adblock List for Internet Explorer 9 : http://fanboy.co.nz/ie.html

Good luck! :)

Oh ok Dredon i see you are in Greece. I think you would get Kaspersky easily over there as Kaspersky is Russian. You can update AVG to 2012 or try Comodo Internet Security. Whatever you do report back. Any help we are there to solve.
