Exact Duplicate Search: finds identical files and entire duplicate folder trees by comparing actual file contents instead of relying on file names.
All-file or image-only scanning: choose to scan every readable file type or narrow the search to images only, depending on what you are cleaning up.
Folder-level matching: duplicate folder groups are identified by matching both file contents and the same relative folder structure.
Size-based grouping: results are grouped and ranked by recoverable size so the largest space-saving opportunities appear first.
Visual Similarity Search: identifies images that look alike even after resizing, cropping, recompression, or light editing.
Adjustable match threshold: set the similarity level anywhere from a broad 80% match up to a strict 97% near-duplicate match.
Side-by-side comparison: preview images alongside their dimensions, dates, and photo metadata to make an informed keep-or-delete decision.
Photo Series Mode: groups photos captured close together in time so bursts and sequences can be reviewed as a single set.
Configurable time gap: set the maximum gap between shots anywhere from 1 second to 10 minutes to match how the photos were actually taken.
Filmstrip browsing with zoom: browse the grouped sequence as a filmstrip and zoom into the currently selected image before choosing which frame to keep.
Automatic Selection Rules: build reusable rules that pre-select files within a group based on your own criteria.
Multiple rule criteria: base rules on file name, extension, size, image resolution, modification date, or creation date.
Manual override before removal: apply a rule to a group, adjust the automatic choices by hand if needed, and review the complete list before confirming.
Local, Privacy-Focused Processing: every scan and comparison runs on your own Mac or Windows computer.
No uploads required: files and photos are never sent to an external server during scanning or review.
Flexible Exclusions: fine-tune exactly what gets scanned before you even start comparing files.
Path and name filtering: skip specific folders, files, names, or extensions that you never want included in a scan.
Hidden item control: choose whether hidden files and folders are included in the scan or left out entirely.
Faster Repeat Scans: subsequent scans of the same files run more efficiently than the first pass.
Cached hashes and metadata: previously calculated file hashes and photo metadata are reused, cutting down repeat processing time.
Removal History and Recovery: keep track of what was cleaned up and undo it if necessary.
Trash-based restore: restore available items from the Trash back to their original locations if you change your mind after a cleanup.
Duplicate Folder Safeguards: an extra verification step protects you from removing folders that may have changed since the scan.
Pre-removal structure check: before a duplicate folder is deleted, DupHunter re-verifies its current structure and contents against the copy being kept, and stops the removal if something changed.
