Unmaintained End-of-Life announcement for Norton Power Eraser

And for those of us who are using a 3rd party AV, enabling WD run to run the Periodic scan, or a Quick Scan is an option as well.
This is an option as well.
Periodic scan with Defender or Eset.

We got lots of options for On demand scans with TM Housecall,Panda CC,KVRT,Sophos S&C, EEK,Fsecure,Arcabit Online,DrWeb,VirIT....I won't miss NPE to be honest

Using Avast Premium this time around, I noticed the option of running it in "Passive Mode." It disables all Core Shields (real-time protection) so that it doesn't interfere with other antiviruses.

You can use Avast as a secondary antivirus this way. It'll stay up to date, and you can run or schedule scans as needed.

Yes you can do that passive mode in Avast and even in AVG. Not sure if Norton got the same.

Users can even put it up a notch by having avast/avg in passive with defender on periodic scan together with another Primary AV.

every once in awhile I'll run MS Defender offline scan, but any real value to doing that, if not why have it as an option...??
Microsoft Defender Offline can be useful in specific cases: by booting into a reduced environment before Windows loads, it can detect malware that hides in memory or interferes with startup. It’s not something you need to run routinely if you already have a solid AV, but as a rescue tool it can make a difference. For periodic checks, on‑demand scanners like KVRT, EEK, or Sophos S&C are usually more practical since they update more frequently. In the end, it’s like checking your car with the engine turned off: you don’t do it every day, but when you suspect a strange noise, that pause can save you from a bigger problem 🚗🔧.

Another approach I used was to move away from relying solely on on-demand scanners. Instead, I maintained a dedicated folder of portable Sysinternals tools right on the desktop. By keeping Process Explorer and Autoruns pre-configured with VirusTotal, plus TCPView, I could perform a comprehensive system health check in seconds.

After reading the thread it does seem there is no advantage for them to give a totally free service when they can charge you for their AV suites, its a pity really esp if you have a really messed up PC to sort out or do AV tests as Shadowra & many others do ??
Yes, it's no secret that Gen Digital is extremely profit-driven. I have a degree of confidence in their threat intelligence, but I'm not in love with everything about them.

My current trial of Avast has been as smooth as butter. The performance and stability are totally on point as far as I can tell, and it sports a friendly UX while still offering some configurability. It works rather well against malicious URLs. However, it's been easy for me to find something dissatisfying about consumer security suites. In the end, I could easily call it quits and just get myself set up with Microsoft Defender.

That's a fair point, but it also greatly benefits themselves: the freemium model drives massive user acquisition, extraordinary brand visibility, a successful cross-sell/conversion funnel, and way more raw data for the threat intelligence network.
win-win situation; who can complain!
At least they did not deprecate their free tier as K did.

NPE does not seem to be working anymore for me. Its stuck on 75% and does nothing after that. Even after downloading a fresh copy.
Anyone else experience this today?

I know about the EOL but that suppose to be at the end of this month. Did they pull the plug early?
