I have a current licence with ESET. If I purchase an upgrade now, will i be able to save it like that? Just hold it until my current subscription expires?

I will defer to others here who are more knowledgable than myself, but my understanding concerning Esets lisence is that it is not tied to the edition you own, but is tied to how long the license has been in use or if the license has even been used....
So to answer your question...
I think if you have for example 6 months left to your license of Eset 2016 and Eset came out with a new edition "2017", then you could upgrade and use the 2017 for 6 months.
I would contact ESET Support, I think the time starts from "Date of Purchase"
I would submit a ticket inquiring asap, to clarify. Only they know how they
are going to apply the rules.

The boxed retail product from e.g Newegg can be saved and activated later on.
But licenses bought online/digital does in all (afaik) cases "start ticking" once the purchase is done, so if you buy a 1yr license today but does not start using the product until 6 months later, then you have lost 6 months and have 6 months left.

@mamamia: Well they have HIPS instead of Behavior Blocker, their detection capabilities are already in the internal component including behavior analysis and sandbox emulation analysis.
@mamamia : there are some instances that ESET have weak protection against script/scriptors but that power goes to HIPS, which you can customize the rules to block and allow certain programs.
Like I said it is already in the internal component of protection their behavior analysis that scan for suspicious behavior.
@Neiltullio: BB scans for suspicious behavior that will block certain operations only.
Meanwhile HIPS can block overall execution of the program.
BB has little advantage since it will be automated hence alerts are reduced compare to HIPS..
