I tried that and through the ESET site to activate it but it's not valid

Activation codes still give license if you activate them on an activation page.However from past experience these will sometime get blacklisted after you activate EAV with it following a few updates.Probably better to activate using the code prior to activating the software.Once you have Username & Password,use it to activate the software.

You have 2 choices to activate the software after install.

1.Activate using an activation code.This requires entering information such as Activation code,Name,address,phone,email,ect. (this is probably where the activation code will be denied on activation)

2.Activate using a Username & Password.This requires no information just the Username & Password. (Probably more likely not to meet an untimely death this way)

If you are using the license and it suddenly says license is not valid while the program is updating then yes.It means that they have blacklisted the license and you will not be able to update the software & virus database unless you enter a valid license or you purchase the software and obviously then you will have a valid license
