The European Court of Justice confirmed a €4.1 billion ($4.7 billion) fine against Google on Thursday, dismissing the company's final appeal in the long-standing Android antitrust case.

The ruling upholds the European Commission's 2018 finding that Google used its Android operating system to strengthen its hold on online search. This decision is now final and cannot be appealed further.

As the highest court in the European Union, the Court of Justice's ruling makes the penalty definitive. Google and its parent company, Alphabet, had challenged a 2022 General Court decision that largely upheld the Commission's findings while reducing the original €4.3 billion fine slightly.

The €4.1 billion fine may seem relatively small for a company the size of Alphabet. However, what matters most may not be the amount itself, but what it represents: now that the penalty is final, competitors who believe they were harmed could seek damages through civil lawsuits. If those claims succeed, the financial and reputational impact on Google could end up being far greater than the fine alone. 💶⚖️
