The EU's plans to modernize copyright law in Europe are moving ahead. The Parliament Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI) has just adopted a draft of the new Digital Services Act. This brings the implementation of various new copyright restrictions, including rapid 30-minute takedowns and requirements to deal with "repeat infringers," a step closer.
In recent years the European Commission has proposed and adopted various legislative changes to help combat online piracy. This includes the
Copyright Directive which passed in 2019 as well as the
Digital Services Act, which was officially unveiled last December. When it comes to the DSA, neither ‘side’ is completely satisfied with the proposed legislation. Copyright holders believe that it doesn’t go far enough, while others warn that the proposal will lead to more upload filters, restricting people’s freedom of speech.
