The European Parliament today voted to approve the Artificial Intelligence Act, which will ban uses of AI "that pose unacceptable risks" and impose regulations on less risky types of AI.

"The new rules ban certain AI applications that threaten citizens' rights, including biometric categorisation systems based on sensitive characteristics and untargeted scraping of facial images from the Internet or CCTV footage to create facial recognition databases," a European Parliament announcement today said. "Emotion recognition in the workplace and schools, social scoring, predictive policing (when it is based solely on profiling a person or assessing their characteristics), and AI that manipulates human behavior or exploits people's vulnerabilities will also be forbidden."

Again with the stupid ideology of "banning" software/services. People have learnt nothing! Where there is demand someone will always supply to meet that demand. Just because there are laws doesn't mean the problem goes away, governments/politician's just push people towards and into black market's/services instead of thoughtfully coming up with solutions that improve society while balancing rights, accountability and responsibilities..

How do you ban something on the Internet? It's banned in one specific jurisdiction but legal everywhere else in the world. It's a matter of who is the lowest common denominator and that's the country that will benefit from all things AI by having the fewest regulations.

Oh I should have clarified. For example they're banning data collection of Europeans for the purposes of some AI tools. What's stopping someone in the US or China from doing so anyway? Data crosses borders and jurisdictions all the time.

I understand it's about privacy I'm just scratching my head on how they plan to enforce it if non-EU countries don't play along.

Data crosses borders and jurisdictions all the time

EU laws dictate that European citizens has be protected and treated separately by everybody that has reach into EU cyberspace. They do issue fines. And in most cases those companies have local branches.or local nationally separated sister corporations. Some companies went as far as building data centers within the EU just to ensure that EU data is treated separately.
