Facebook has refused to take down a page called “Pedophiles are People Too” that features a disturbing image of a young girl being followed down an alley by a grown man. Instead of removing it, Facebook added a “Controversial Humor” tag to the page.

“We should not be giving people like this an audience and a platform,” said Jetta Bernier, executive director of Massachusetts Citizens for Children, to the Boston Herald. “We cannot normalize this behavior. It is too devastating to children.”

Facebook, for its part, has maintained its party line that any “humorous” content, no matter how offensive, can remain on its site. However, given Facebook’s recent troubles on the market, many experts are questioning the company’s stubbornness and hesitancy in the face of public pressure.

Disgusting.

Don't forget when Mark Z(something) wanted young people under 13 to have a Facebook too.

This is just wrong on so many levels.

This is terrible, as Jetta Bernier said these people should not be given attention like this, all it will do is encourage them and put tons of children at risk, and Facebook adding a humor tag this isn't a laughing matter this is very serious

This is one of the reason why Facebook can be a bad thing.

I remember a few months ago a page I liked told everyone to go Report this Pedo page.
It had a underage girl posing and the page was named "I like little girls"

So, I got an email saying that my report was reviewed and they said "No evidence was found on this page to be offensive and breaking our terms of use"

I was like "O_O WTF?"

It is what USA fight For and are proud of : "freedom of expression"

USA allows nazi or extremist groups and sects, authorizes citizens to have guns, sees nothing bad in Scientology cult, makes war for pure financial benefits, etc... so im not very surprised...

It is not xenophobic, it is the truth , i lived in US and some members of my family are still living there, i saw those facts, so it is xenophobic to tell the truth?

To compare with France:
Scientology Church and sects are highly monitored, guns are forbidden to normal citizens, Nazis groups like KKK doesn't have any voices and can be sued just for existing.

Vietnam & Irak wars were made for pure desire of giving freedom to the people...?

Come on...where is the stupidity...

I am half-french half Vietnamese, grown in France, lived in US when i was young, living now in Vietnam.

i think my point of view is not biased.

note: since the time i hang around on MT, people here should know that i avoid to say things without experienced them myself or without any proof.

My post was not meant to disregard USA but to show that with these facts, what Facebook said was not so surprising.

USA is a dual side country, porn is a big business but in some states showing a tit or practicing anal sex is forbidden and prosecuted...

Thanks :D

The stupidity is making a comment that because the U.S. allows freedom of expression, (As long as no laws are being broken) that must be why Facebook allows a group about Pedophilia (Which is illegal in the U.S., by the way) to exist...

Nope. The majority of the people in the U.S. (Just like everywhere, I'd assume) find the concept of Pedophilia disgusting. Even though they believe in freedom of expression!

Freedom of expression does not make it fine to discuss illegal activities.

Freedom of expression does not turn anyone into a sexual deviant, nor does it make anyone who is a sexual deviant a welcomed member of the community. Anyone who has been convicted of a sexual offense (after they are released from prison and have undergone counseling) is required by law to be registered in database that the public can access to see if there are any sex offenders living in their neighborhood. Convicted pedophiles will even be arrested if they are caught within a certain distance of a school!

Freedom of expression does mean, that if a person wants to believe in a religion like Scientology, they can. There is nothing illegal in believing ancient space aliens are the cause of all evil in people. Crazy, yes. Illegal, no.

Again, (and I can't stress this enough) Pedophilia is not cool, even in a country that believes in freedom of expression!

It's also ridiculous to state that the U.S. is making money from war. War is actually very expensive, and a large portion of the population is against it.

We're a multi-national forum here guys. We need to be sensitive towards other countries and cultures.

Making blanket statements that jump to conclusions like: -insert country here- does this, so therefore they must -insert offense here-! Is not something we want to get into around here...

That's were the stupidity is, Umbra.

Unfortunately, if memory serves me right, anywhere in the world Pedo is illegal, apart from being immoral and disgusting.

Ain't there anything that authorities can do to force Facebook to remove such pages?

That is to note that there is also another risk factor here within facebook. A lot of families post pictures of their kids etc on Facebook and even create accounts for them (bare in mind they are not able to use facebook at that age) and most of the time the settings for the pictures are visible to anyone for starters... This is only an invitation for such predators...

Wouldn't there be a petition of some sort to remove such content from facebook?

If you don't like it, don't read/look it. Being offended is just a whine. This page has clearly been set up to be controversial and cause this kind of publicity.

It all comes from California, not the rest of the contiguous United States. Hehe

On a more serious note; law enforcement is glad to see more efficient monitoring of pedophiles via their facebook log on. Otherwise they might never know the clan responsible for that particular pedophile rite exists.

HeffeD, you misunderstood my whole point.
On my 1st post, i meant : it is because USA proclaim "Freedom of Expression" (forgot which amendment) that some people use it as a reason to express some extreme opinions or ideas. It is why i said i was not surprised.
I doesn't meant to support Pedophilia or other abject topics...

Nope. The majority of the people in the U.S. (Just like everywhere, I'd assume) find the concept of Pedophilia disgusting. Even though they believe in freedom of expression!

me too, don't misunderstand that from me. And especially in Vietnam, where some western old predators lurks showing their money.

Freedom of expression does not make it fine to discuss illegal activities.

Of course, but what is illegal in some countries may be ltolerated or even legal in others. since Facebook is multi-national , we should expect that from it.

In France , it is the same too. But once again, i never said FoE should allows illegal stuffs.

Freedom of expression does mean, that if a person wants to believe in a religion like Scientology, they can. There is nothing illegal in believing ancient space aliens are the cause of all evil in people. Crazy, yes. Illegal, no.

In scientology case, it is not the beliefs that is "illegal" but the way they make profit from their brainwashed members. it is considered as a sect in France, because they isolate people from their families to get possession of their members' wealth.

Again, (and I can't stress this enough) Pedophilia is not cool, even in a country that believes in freedom of expression!

i really think that you imagine that i support pedophilia...ONCE AGAIN it is not the case.

It's also ridiculous to state that the U.S. is making money from war. War is actually very expensive, and a large portion of the population is against it.

Sorry but for that, a country (USA) that makes war to an oil producer country (Irak) based on proof-less allegations that they have chemical mass destruction weapons, then after winning the conflict, some american oil companies were deployed immediately, and Irak oil reclaims as compensation, is surely not for money...

We're a multi-national forum here guys. We need to be sensitive towards other countries and cultures.

i am multi-national if you care to read my precedent posts. So i am aware of that. but it is not a reason to censure my opinions.

Making blanket statements that jump to conclusions like: -insert country here- does this, so therefore they must -insert offense here-! Is not something we want to get into around here...

it is not blank statement but facts , from experiences i got when i was in US. USA as any countries have good and bad sides.
Also i don't criticize the citizens in that thread but the government behavior.

That's were the stupidity is, Umbra.

you just made a blank Statement :

insert a person here (Umbra) said this, so therefore they must -insert offense here- (stupidity, because it is opposed or different of my point of view) !

Since here I never insulted anyone because my opinion is different from them, or said that some points of view are stupid. I try to understand why first, then try to correct if wrong.

As you said, we are here from many cultures and countries, what may be offending/hurting/misplaced in your country may be perfectly normal in others one and vice-versa.

As a Moderator, you should be the first to behave properly, and not throwing the stamp "stupidity" on my forehead.

Thanks :D

I'm sorry if you misunderstood my comment, Umbra. I did not mean to offend. You asked where the stupidity was, so I told you.

Please be aware that I'm not calling you stupid. I'm saying that making any particular country-centric baseless or inane comments is stupidity that we don't need around here. Big difference there.

And yes, those sort of sentiments are exactly the sorts of opinions you should keep to yourself.

Please understand that we want the forum to be a fun place for everyone to enjoy spending time. If conversations start getting political or bigoted around here, people aren't going to want to visit.

I'm also sorry that you don't approve of the way I handled this. Moderation is difficult to do well, and moderators are often unpopular due to the very nature of having to enforce order. Regardless, I felt it best to lay out exactly what the problem I had with your statement was. Nip it in the bud, so-to-speak.

I suppose it could have been less blunt, but I chose to err on the side of complete disclosure so there would be little doubt as to how I felt about the subject. And I suppose it could be argued that I should have sent a PM regarding this, but my choice was to keep this out in the public so others would be aware of my stance on such topics.

If you believe that I have behaved improperly, then by all means bring it up with Jack.

ok so it is fine to me

that is the fact that i lived in US for a while, and some of my comments were based on my own personal experiences.

.

I will remember that.

I want it too, and i am not the most stingy about jokes here, but for me a forum should allow all kind of point of views (unless illegal or explicitly offensive), it was one reason i choose to stay on MT over other most famous ones.

i was admin before, so i can understand exactly how you feel.

that is all your honor, i am not opposed to some strong but polite discussions.
I felt offended when you treated my comment (so indirectly me) as Xenophobe without at least asking why was the reason of my statements.
I just wanted to point, in my first post, that some good ideals like "freedom of expression" (and other freedoms that USA is well known to promote) could be easily perverted and manipulated by extremist/political/financial groups for their own benefits.
Sorry if it was not clear enough.

If you believe that I have behaved improperly, then by all means bring it up with Jack.

No need, it is already an old story to me.

Thanks :D

I emphasized what I feel is very important to this discussion.

Yes, all points of view should be allowed, within reason. Contrary to what many people think, freedom of speech does not apply on an internet forum. The problem comes with religious or governmental/political posts. People tend to feel very strongly about these subjects, and seemingly innocuous topics can quickly become a crapstorm of epic proportions! As a moderator, it is my job to head off these lines of thought before they go out of control. It doesn't need to be explicitly offensive for things to go bad very quickly.

Umbra Corp. said:

At the time, I didn't feel it was important to discern why you were making such a statement, only to stop that thought process before it went any further. Again, my intention wasn't to offend.

Umbra Corp. said:

Sorry if it was not clear enough.

Fair enough. :)

It may interest you to note that I've received a PM from a user that read the exact same sentiment in your post that I did. And this is the sort of thing we want to avoid. What if a prospective forum user read your post and decided not to register based on what they saw as Xenophobic comments?

In a multi-national forum setting, English is very likely not everyone's native language, so context is an easy thing to misconstrue.

Just food for thought.
