Other programs:
Iobit Uninstaller
CCleaner

My PC is just a month old so I haven't installed many security related programs yet. I am, though, on the lookout for good security options :D I also want to replace Norton because it's just a trial version.

Thank you!

You cannot use Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 8. Install denied.

Windows 8 comes with a built-in AV protection called Windows Defender. It uses the same definitions as MSE, with a slight UI differences.

You are using a Trial. So some suggestion.

Free Antivirus:
Comodo Internet Security
Avast Free Antivirus
Avira Free Antivirus
AVG Free Antivirus
Microsoft Security Essential

Plugins:
WOT
BitDefender Traffic Light

On-Demand Scanners:
Hitman Pro
Emsisoft Emergency Kit
Comodo Cleaning Essential

OP is on Windows 8.

MSE is rebranded to Windows Defender...

His Security Awareness: Basic
Would not in a million years recommend Comodo Internet Security.

Windows Defender is fine as it is.

As for On Demand scanners, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is enough.

Note: Try giving the official links as opposed to Filehippo, so users can get used to visit the official websites first.

i also agree.

@Unknown: When you give some suggestions about AVs, you must first analyze properly the system and background of the Original Poster, also you must have a good knowledge of how every AVs work so your suggestion will fit the OP. Just throwing a list of AVs is not helping.

If you like Norton enough to buy it after the trial is finished, you can get a good price at Purplus.com

(or if anyone else knows of a better deal, please share)

Would not in a million years recommend Comodo Internet Security. < I do agree.

Comodo Internet Security is like a time bomb, If you don't set it right it will blow up in your face.

You got to know how it works, and how it runs. So for a Basic user it's not good. Even some advance users find it hard.

:)

Anyway that is my opinion :)

But otherwise a great Config at the moment :)

I wouldn't say a time bomb. Default settings on 5.10/5.12 for example are just fine. Version 6 from what I gather, has some issues but overall is also fine.

The problem is when the user doesn't know what he/she is doing exactly and that's where the product starts to break. Then again, such scenario happens to any software that has options and allows users to tweak and it doesn't just happen on Security Products.

Thank you for the responses!

I've read somewhere that Windows Defender (previously MSE) is not as good as it had been before. I am considering choosing a free antivirus (Avast, Avira, etc.). What should I choose? Or is Windows Defender, as Biozfear has said, really enough?

I also forgot to tell that I frequently torrent files. Can MBAM handle it?

Thanks in advance :D

P.S. A bit sad I don't get to try Comodo. But I find it interesting so I might take some time to study how it works :)

MBAM should be enough for a On Demand Scanner, when downloading torrents as well as any free AV or WD.

Beware of avast! on windows 8 though. I believe the current version still causes many problems and I believe the only work around is a patch. You will need to have a look at avast! forums for it.

I still suggest for you to use Windows Defender in Windows 8 until you are more comfortable with knowledge on other products.

Also beware of sources where you get torrents and browsing habits.

Avira doesn't support Windows 8 (yet), though they are trying to improve it's compatibility (see here).

Windows Defender should be good enough, if you're not purposely downloading cracks, keygens etc or other malware. Google Chrome and IE10 has decent protection against Malicious downloads.

I guess I'm sticking with Windows Defender since I don't download cracks and malware and I pretty much know general Internet security. Thanks guys!

Is there a part of the forum where I can learn more about security and other software? Like a beginner's guide? I kinda want to know about Sandboxie and Comodo and other things :))

I have a question: if a certain antivirus works wonders in Windows 7, does it follow that it also works well on Windows 8? I thought that since it works well on 7, it can also work well on 8 since 8 is in a nutshell just Windows 7 + Metro apps. Or am I wrong?

There is more to simply W7 + Metro.

Unfortunately, programs that work on Windows 7 and don't have yet official releases for Windows 8 are not fully compatible and can cause issues. Some don't work, full stop. Other work but then problems appear.

5.10 /5.12 is good.

The time Bomb happened to me. Something went wrong with CIS 6.0 and (My Personal Folder) under Users had all Yellow Padlocks on them I.E My Documents, Downloads, Pictures and Music etc.

Lucky I got to restore my system back, so is fine now

This Happend in Laptop that I use every other day .

So that is why I say that Bio

P.S. I ran all Malware/Security tests all clean.

Feel bad for what happened to you. This is a rule I always adhere: Never update to newest version straight away and let it be used for awhile before you get your hands on it. Learnt that when SP3 came out on day one and was taken off few hours later due to wipes.

You could still use 5.10/5.12 as it is stable enough I suppose. CIS6 has many improvements but at the same time not easy straight forward.

In short, any New Version of any software can be a time bomb when things go horribly wrong when you least expect for whatever reasons that are valid.

That is true, Many thanks for your Advice.

Yeah the Padlocks where strange. I could open the files under my Personal folder under Users OK. But if right clicked a folder and looked at Properties of My Documents etc it said 0 files, and My Documents had 6 files inside.

O well onwards and upwards :)
