Today, the #1 trending topic on Reddit forum is the discovery of fake cellphone towers in the United States. The breaking news had more than 1300 users voicing their concerns on the thread.

Fake cellphone towers have been discovered in multiple countries in Asia since last year, especially in China. These fake cellphone towers spread false information and spam, leading to many cases of fraud. On August 21, China’s largest Internet security company, Qihoo 360, released “Chinese Fake Cellphone Tower SMS Report”. The report revealed a number of risks associated with these fake cellphone towers, in addition to the frequency and distribution of their locations.

With the supposed presence of 'fake cell towers' in the US, will there be even more 'false information and spam' to go around?? At least we cannot lay claim to this being "..only in America", though every time I'll see another cell tower I shall wonder: "Is it real, or is it fake?" ..which is a far cry from what used to be "Is it live, or is it Memorex?"

The "phony cell towers" they're referring to are intercepting devices that could fit in your backpack, like computers and radios. They aren't real 'steel towers'.

i am pretty sure this will not fit in to a back pack.

So did the people behind that phony tower came back and took down the tower, part by part, put it on a truck and ran away ???

For more info, read the original article. Nowhere in the original article does it say that any physical towers are being built -- the "phony cell towers" they're referring to are intercepting devices that could fit in your backpack, like computers and radios.
