Solved Fake Google Chrome Virus Keeps Returning

I had a friend who called about 8 weeks ago, saying that her Norton 360 was detecting high memory usage from Google. I stopped by to take a look and of course she did not have Google Chrome installed. The program it was detecting was the same as these other threads ... a random filename in a random directory that Norton 360 was detecting as Google Chrome.

I cleaned it up (I am in IT), and everything was fine for 4 weeks or so, when the same thing happened again. Same drill, cleaned it up, and this time it has been fine for 5 weeks. Then today, I get the same call. Reallllllly annoying.

Is it likely I missed something, or if that was the case, would it have returned much quicker?

Is it possible there is a site she is going to that keeps infecting her, and 360 just isn't catching?

BTW ... this computer was hit with the POWELIKS virus in early November. Norton hadn't even classified it yet, but they day afterwards, it started to catch it. Around 11/11.

I ran all the removal tools at the time, and it said the machine was clean.

Running it on another one may cause damage and render the system unstable.

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!

  • Right-click on
    FRST.gif
    icon and select
    RunAsAdmin.jpg
Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
  • Press the Fix button just once and wait.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  • When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.

Please attach it to your reply.

Here are the requested files.

Do you think this is something that was on the system way back from November, or was it a new infection? I obviously ran MBAM in the past and it detected nothing.

Yes, but it was good the last three times I cleaned it up, too, LOL!

Do you think, judging from the lines in the FIXLIST, that this stuff has been around for a while? I am trying to prevent this person from getting this again in the future.

I'm trying to figure out if it is something *I* missed on previous cleanups, or they keep getting infected from elsewhere.

Yes, in the past I used the MD anti-rootkit. I also did scans with just about every program under the sun (including using FRST and deleting files it marked as suspicious). It always comes back clean, and the computer runs fine for about 4 weeks.

I did notice the last time that the Intel files you deleted were throwing up errors in the Event log. Is it possible those weren't really the Intel files and malware? May I ask why you deleted them?

BTW, sent you something. Do you really use it to buy beer? As a beer lover myself I am curious :)

I have used MBAR and FRST fix
See infection and logs.

Infections:

process > C:\Users\Evelyn\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Ubxhbcxitb\Dnqsftsdbfq\Fayuqzfcylt.exe (FRST fix)
startup > HKU\S-1-5-21-922275967-2694487020-1275499494-1000\...\Run: [qxzmawm] => regsvr32.exe /s "C:\Users\Evelyn\AppData\Local\Windows Live\qxzmawm.dll" (MBAR fix)

MBAM can not remove the infection.

BTW, sent you something. Do you really use it to buy beer? As a beer lover myself I am curious

Of course :)

My question is ... those files were not there the last time I ran MBAR.

So how did they get there in the past couple of weeks?

May I ask why you deleted (I am assuming you deleted) the other selection in the FRST fix file? I'm just trying to learn. Feel free to PM if you would prefer.

Ultimately, I just don't want this getting back on the machine. This is the 4th time since Novemeber it has had this same Google Chrome issue.

More will not return safely. I am finished training and six years I removal malware.
I work with all the tools depends on the infection.
FRST is a diagnostic tool, but need to know how it works scripting (fix).

Glad we could help. We will delete all used tools.

Download DelFix by Xplode and save it to your desktop.
  • Run the tool by right click on the
    51a5ce45263de-delfix.png
icon and Run as administrator option.
  • Make sure that these ones are checked:
    • Remove disinfection tools
    • Purge system restore
    • Reset system settings
  • Push Run and wait until the tool completes his work.
  • All tools we used should be gone. Tool will create an report for you (C:\DelFix.txt)
The tool will also record healthy state of registry and make a backup using ERUNT program in %windir%\ERUNT\DelFix
Tool deletes old system restore points and create a fresh system restore point after cleaning.

I have a quick question:

Norton 360 in the logs said it blocked an attempt by FRST to delete a registry key. Is that why it needs to reboot, and does it on the reboot?

Also, I found some references to the malware folders in the registry. Is that "OK" since the files are gone? I attached an example.

Don't worry, it's Norton heuristics, blocks almost all of the tools we use.
