Google has started sending out invites for its fall hardware event, which is set to take place on Thursday, October 6th, at 10AM ET. The event will launch the upcoming Pixel 7 phones, as well as the Pixel Watch — the company showed off both devices at its I/O event earlier this year, announcing they’re coming in the fall.

The leaks haven’t revealed much about the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro that we didn’t already know, such as the fact that it has an aluminum camera bar with two cutouts on the rear for the Pro model. Someone managed to unbox and boot up the phone, but given that Android 13 has already started to roll out on other devices, that’s not really a novelty. Earlier this year, though, a Redditor got a hold of a prototype Pixel Watch (allegedly, it was left at a restaurant). While it wouldn’t boot, their pictures did give us a better sense of the Watch’s size, as well as how it’ll actually look on the wrist.

The Pixel 7 seems like it’ll be a pretty straightforward continuation of the previous generation of phones, but there’s a bit of pressure with the Watch as the “first smartwatch built by Google, inside and out,” as its product page on Google’s online store says. Google’s competitors (namely Samsung and Apple) have been making wearables for years, so the company’s entry has to be competent and at least somewhat competitive right out of the gate. So far, details about it are scant — we don’t even know what chip it’ll use — but we should get a clearer picture come October 6th.

2022 Google Pixel Watch:
  • $349 price tag
  • Same SoC as 2018 Galaxy Watch
  • Smaller battery
While we don’t have official numbers for the Pixel Watch, it is running a chip from 2018 and has a smaller battery.
9to5Google in May reported that the Pixel Watch is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 9110. It features a co-processor and over 1.5GB of RAM, which should surpass what’s offered on Wear OS today. Meanwhile, the 32GB of storage is double that of existing devices and allows users to store many songs offline.

That chip dates back to 2018 with the Tizen-powered Galaxy Watch, but various tasks should be offloaded to the co-processor. It’s unclear how Google will identify this SoC and whether Tensor branding will be applied.
Meanwhile, we can note that European pricing for the Pixel Watch is not cheaper than the US price, contrary to other rumors today.

Google has a lot of competition in the smartwatch marketplace.
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 starts at $279 for the 40mm and $309 for the 44mm. These watches come with a sapphire display, WearOS 3, and multi-day battery life.

Pixel 7 and 7 Pro comes with a Google One VPN at no extra cost. (Otherwise included in the Google One 2TB plan).
To further emphasize the broader Google ecosystem, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro come with free access to the VPN service from Google One. Normally requiring a subscription to the $9.99/month 2TB plan, Pixel 7 owners will have access to Google’s secure VPN, encrypting your traffic to protect it from attackers. While not as nice of a perk as the days when Pixel phones came with free Google Photos uploads, a free VPN is a nice addition for the security conscious.

Notably, the free VPN access does not include the other perks of Google One, which still require a separate subscription. Additionally, Google says the Pixel 7’s free VPN is “coming soon,” meaning it likely will not be available immediately after launch.
