Google has started to roll its own ads in the Chrome web browser. Is this a deal-breaker for you?

The ads appear at the top of the new-tab page and currently seem to be advertising Chrome OS-powered Chromebooks.

Here’s what the ad looks like:

Note: I’ve not see the ad myself yet. maybe that’s because I’m running the beta, or maybe Google is doing a limited roll-out of the ads.

Ads in Chrome... or how to kill a successful browser ... I for one didn't see any ads in Chrome and yes ,I'm running the stable version but If I do , I'll have only one option : Firefox ...

I used Chrome religiously at one stage, though after reading the vulnerability certain extension codes can create, even if claimed to have been fixed, I lost trust. Atleast on my main PC. It's lack of a solid HTTPS-Everywhere extension was also a deal breaker. The browser in itself is most secure, without extensions, though seeing this whole ad ordeal, I feel happier to have cast my loyalty to Firefox and it's add-ons :)

If this will become reality , then the ads will be displayed most likely , like in Gmail .. It's important to be noted that not all the links from the ads are safe , I did manage to see a few time some ads which had a Red Warning from WOT..... Didn't really click on them so I don't know where they've lead...

From the article itself, in the comments, could not have been said better..
Their search engine has the least amount of ads compared to others. As for youtube, Google lost hundreds of millions of dollars for years to keep the site running when it had less ads. Realistically, they couldn't keep that up so I would prefer they offer the service and let those of us who know AdBlock Plus use it.

Thumbs up to Adblock!

My chromium based browser is SRWare Iron and it doesn't have any type of ads thankfully.

Well to Google's credit the 'ad' from ZDnet screen doesn't look like a standard ad.... It looks more like a a promo for their Chromebook and it does have the X (close) sign...... I really doubt that Google will ever add any ads on Chrome but then again I might be wrong! :)

We accept ads on G-mail and Google Search because these are good services and so well known that most people can't even think of an alternative, but Google Chrome is not irreplaceable yet. Maybe Google is just testing its users :D

I have seen the ad in Google Chrome when opening a new tab. Now for some reason the ad is no longer visible. It doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Some things to keep in mind:
1) This is a basic text based ad - no flash or heavy BS
2) You can easily close this ad by clicking "Ignore"
3) The ad will literally go away on its own
4) This ad will only ever show up on your Chrome newtab page

If all ads were like this I doubt anyone would use an adblocker.

This isn't even close to being a big deal.

I feel a browser should stay neutral. A web page showing ads is one thing, my browser showing ads is another thing entirely...

Well even I didn't used Google Chrome, no problems when dealing in ads.

Well as long the ads is legit and safe then there is no problem for it.

Alright, as long as it's as little and unseen as it is and it's not going to get bigger.
