I have my Android L device encrypted, so upon a system restart/reboot it prompts for a PIN (longer than 4). If someone attempts to enter the wrong PIN multiple times, the phone is erased and all data is lost. However, I don't think it's secure as claimed.

In my opinion, a major flaw is when you share your PIN with a trusted person. Apple iPhone devices are encrypted by default, I assume when the user enables the user PIN or Touch ID. However, these measures can be bypassed if someone else knows the code, or your iCloud password is lost when phish-ed. Your phone can be cloned, where your iPhone sync'd data is loaded onto a new device.

Encryption is one part of securing your data, but not completely foolproof.
