Google's Play Protect Android mobile threat protection system failed German antivirus testing lab AV-Test real-world tests, scoring zero out of a maximum of six points after very weak malware detection performance.

The Google Play Protect built-in malware protection for Android was introduced three years ago, during the Google I/O 2017 in May 2017, with Google starting full deployment to all Android devices during July 2017.

Today, Google's Play Protect is deployed on over 2.5 billion active Android devices as shown by the Android security center.

It's worth mentioning here that you might want to disable it, if you are using F-Droid and software such as NewPipe. There is always chance that Google will block your account, if you are using apps which block their ads. Google Play Protect will scan ALL the apps and send the information further to Google servers.

According to the replies, this post was deemed false and that the user posting was a troll.

NewPipe is a YT front-end client. You can import your Subscriptions (see how), but you cannot interact with content.

I recently installed an App from outside the Play Store on an Android 6 Marshallow device. The device is Play Protect certified, and had Play Protect enabled. Upon install of foreign APK, Play Protect notified but did not block the installation of NewPipe.

As far as I know, as long as you do not log into your Google account on a modified APK that use their Services it should be fine.

Example; Spotify Dogfood was an example where your Spotify account could be terminated due to violating the terms.
