According to a letter seen by TorrentFreak, Google are threatening action against one of the web’s largest YouTube conversion sites.
The site, which according to Google’s own stats is pulling in 1.3 million visitors every day, extracts MP3 audio from YouTube videos and makes it available for users to download. Google’s lawyers say this must stop, and have given the site seven days to comply.

Update: We have just been informed that Google may be targeting other similar services with the same message. If your site is affected, please contact us at the usual address.

Update2: The owner of YouTube-MP3 has just informed us that his site does not use the API, but obtains videos by other means.

Update3: Music-Clips.net received a letter from Google as well.

And this is different from putting an empty cassette in an old radio player and recording the music that plays over the radio?

Some of us have a monthly bandwidth cap and can't afford to constantly listen to music over Youtube everyday, It's alot easier to just convert it into an mp3 to listen at any given time. Especially in times where I might not have an internet connection to use Youtube to listen to music.

Everyone I've met uses some type of Youtube to MP3 service, Either that be online or with an application that does it.

Hold on, What's that Google?

Oh... of course.

Services like iTunes, Beatport etc don't always have the track you may want, Not as easy as just saying buy the track if you want to be able to listen to it at anytime.

I expect Google to go after the other online conversion websites that allow Youtube to MP4 or Youtube to AVI etc.

Remember, Google isn't evil! /sarc

If Google is targeting sites, what about the applications that do exactly the same thing?

Just another way to try to monopolize its capital since youtube belongs to google.

What about chrome extensions which allows users to download videos with the following conversion options: Mp3, FLV, MP4 and etc?

Google is already trying to remove those. There was a YouTube enhancement extension that has downloader disabled because of Google's policy. But the full app can be downloaded from the developer's page, the link will be in the extension where you can't download videos.

Note that the website has a petition, http://www.change.org/petitions/google-inc-youtube-llc-allow-third-party-recording-tools-for-youtube

Created 3 days ago and has over 140000 signatures out of 150000.

Not that Google will care, Money is more important of course and the RIAA aren't known to be nice. Thanks.

Used the site, as it usually gave me the file instantly, unlike other sites/programs which I had to wait for to complete the conversion etc.

Do no evil... lol
