Two of my favorite ukuleles were made in Taiwan.
You listed travel as an interest. Don't skip a visit to Hawaii -- especially the Big Island (Isle of Hawaii) where there is an active BUT visitor-friendly volcano -- plus Black Sand Beach (the sand really is black), plus amazing Akaka Falls, plus grrreat hotels Kona-side. Be sure and ride a mule on Molokai's cliffs -- scary but amazing!
