Hi: My name is Shadow, happy to get to know people here. To be honest, I've been quite startled and scared about all the "crazy malware" that's been flying around these days, and have been hunting for a site where I could network with other people. e.g. this heartbleed virus has me rather worried, along with the fact that I got an email from the Avast forum saying they'd been hacked! (I'm hoping that someone would verify that).

I'm also wondering what antivirus programs members INVESTED in?

And, as the icing on the cake, what strategy do you use to keep the kitty off of the keyboard? ;)

cheers,

S.

EDIT: and how do I change my computer knowlege key from "medium" back to "basic." Yeesh! :OI

Welcome!
PS: I wanted to address your mistake on antivirus program. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not an antivirus, even the pro/premium version. A proper antivirus is Kaspersky, Bitdefender, Avast, McAfee, Norton, AVG, Avira, ESET, Emsisoft, etc. Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, IObit Malware Fighter and other similar products are supposed to run along with existing Antivirus. They have real-time protection (only in pro/premium probably). Hitman Pro, Emsisoft Freeware, Adwcleaner, and other similar products are supposed to be second-option scanners without any real-time protection. Here is my layer:
1. Antivirus= Kaspersky (Avast until today)
2. Antimalware=Malwarebytes
3. Second Option= Hitman Pro
Another Note: They have an awesome giveaway on Hitman Pro right up there, probably only a few hours until closure!

First of all weclome to MT, secondly, i have heard most ppl saying that it is a bit heavier on system. I have been using bitdefender, do look at that too. But beware, there is a bug in Firewall of Bitdefender that will eat your bandwidth if you are having a limited bandwidth that might be a problem(affects some users only).

If money is a problem, use Qihoo 360. Its totally free and uses engine of Bitdefender for anti malware and avira together with its own cloud engine. Due to that its detection rates are most of the time high than compared with other AV vendors.

Drawback: last time i used it, it had no firewall

Second opinion: ESET

Worst opinion: Symantec Norton, McCafee (Although now its detection rate is improving so i might change my opinion :p)
