How to open DOC files when MS Word is not installed on the computer


Google Docs is a direct tool in a package of utilities developed by Google. This utility is capable of reading DOC files on the computer’s hard drives, creating and saving documents in DOC format and easily importing a DOC file with a large size from 500KB to 1024MB.

Step 1: Access Google Docs

Click arrow symbol on Create section -->Files to select a Word file from the computer.

Step 2: A dialogue box opens and displays the duration for downloading the DOC file. The duration will depend on the file size.

Click file name to open the downloaded DOC file

SkyDrive can open DOC files, using the Word Web App, but as with Google Docs, it first must be uploaded.

I prefer Drive, but OpenOffice is also a great MS Office alternative, especially if you don't have a constant connection or don't want your documents in the cloud.

Actually, @lassise, LibreOffice is a better choice than OpenOffice. I used to use OO until they starting making some awful decisions, and was told about LiberOffice, by a friend. :)

If you want to open documents (most common file types) without anything to be installed on your PC there's portable viewers like AbiWord
and Atlantis Word Processor.
Atlantis is not free but unregistered version is limited as unregistered version of WinRar :D
