It's high time I do this as well. Although I have had to reset Windows 8 before (more than once) before upgrading to 8.1, & following the appearance of the dreaded:eek: blue screen of death, familiarizing one's self (myself) with reinstalling the system's image plus it's important files, documents, & pictures, brings me to task in also considering it's an effective method of defeating ransomware; and I especially agree with maanastr's words, "I know this is very basic...".;):D

When I started using image backups(my first was Seagate Disc Wizard) I learned the hard way as I was only using 1 hard drive divided into 2 partitions. The 2nd partition is where the backup is stored. When the drive failed on me all was lost.

Now I have a separate drive for my OS (usually ot lower than 2 partitions). My files and sensitive files(encrypted) are placed on a second hard drive so if anything untoward happens to my main drive. I still have my files safe in the second hard drive. Both main drive and 2nd hard drive I image to a 3rd hard drive. File/Folder backup and System/Partition Backup. I keep a 4th internal hard drive as backup also but that is only for emergencies and 2 externals. I usually do whole partition image backups so when something happens I can restore i just 10-15minutes(good as new!). I use Macrium Reflect Free and Acronis True Image Home 2012 with Plus Pack. Last year I used Paragon Hard Disc Manager Suite 12 and it was okay ut I would always return to Macrium and Acronis :)

Invest in a good reliable storage and make sure that you check it's health. Your backup scheme will vary on your needs and what you wanna backup. The links that the guys provided are superb and is a very good read. I'd like to add some herefor your perusal.

WOW! These are great replies. Makes my old heart beat faster. I never knew these threads existed on MT.
I guess I should have clicked on more than just "What's new".
Sorry if I'm off topic a little, but I had to post this reply.;) I'm excited.
They sure are hidden.

Imaging is so extremely powerful. It's still important to keep backups of personal files, because they are updated more than you will need to image. The best plan I find is to image the drive once a week (or more depending on how often you make changes to the system i.e. add programs/change Windows or system settings, etc.) and then one once a month. Then you can focus on using a synching tool to synch your personal files.

One thing I didn't know about imaging before I started was that the entire process of restoring an image is done outside of Windows. Imaging programs include a function which will enable you to burn a boot disk. Using the boot disk, you simply boot into the boot disk program (instead of Windows) and navigate to the image and select it to begin the restore. It's 100% fool-proof as long as the backups are happening as scheduled and as long as hard drive diagnostics are being monitored on a relatively frequent basis. Here it's ultimately beneficial to have a new drive in the closet to replace a failed one on the spot. Also, not a bad idea to back up your backups to a third drive. After all, your backup drive is eventually going to go. Usually, you will be able to rescue the backups, but three drives is a darn good practice.

Oh, and please make sure you like the program you will be using. Image backups are of a certain type for each different program, and they are large (16 GB or so for a 35 GB full drive). It would be sort of painful to have to get rid of all of this to start with a new program. Also, each of the programs has its very small quirky features and limitations. Picking the one you can live with means avoiding alot of work deleting old backups and creating new ones...
