This whole "cake sending" habit started when the Internet Explorer team sent one to the relatively new Firefox devs, congratulating them on shipping version 2.0 of their now famous browser.
Nobody knows if this was actually done out of spite, real kindness or just mockery, but as time went on, the IE and Firefox teams continued to send each other sugary goodies on a regular basis, mostly from Microsoft to Mozilla, since Firefox had a faster release cycle than IE.
Probably, that's why, as Firefox released more and more versions, the cakes got smaller and smaller, IE devs sending at one time just a tiny cupcake with the release of Firefox 6
