Next year's iPhone 14 Pro and ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro Max will feature hole-punched LTPO OLED display panels supplied by Samsung and LG, according to Korean site The Elec.

Rumors that the 2022 iPhone models won't have a notch started in March of this year, when Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said they will instead adopt a hole-punch design, a design that Android devices have used for a few years now. The hole-punch is a center-placed cutout for the front-facing camera that allows for a larger display area in lieu of a notch.

Kuo believes that at a minimum, the high-end ‌iPhone‌ models will have the hole-punch design, though if yields are good, all ‌iPhone‌ models coming in 2022 could feature the same notchless design.

More recent rumors have suggested the non-Pro ‌iPhone 14‌ models, which will measure in at 6.1 and 6.7 inches, will continue to have a notch, with Apple limiting the hole-punch design to the more expensive iPhones. There will not be an "‌iPhone 14‌ mini," with this year's iteration of the smaller device being the last, according to reports.

iPhone 14 Pro models will feature a pill-shaped camera cutout at the top of the display, with the notch removed, according to tweets shared by leaker @dylandkt, who has proven to be a reliable source of Apple-related rumors over the last year or so. To accommodate this change, the leaker said Face ID hardware will be moved under the display.

While it has been widely reported that iPhone 14 Pro models will not have a notch by reputable sources like analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, this is the first time we've heard about the possibility of a pill-shaped camera cutout at the top of the display instead of a circular hole-punch cutout that was originally rumored.

Face ID moving under the display has likewise been rumored previously by display industry consultant Ross Young, who has proven to be a reliable source of display-related information for future Apple products. Last year, for example, Young accurately claimed that the new iPad mini would feature an 8.3-inch display with the home button removed.

In a tweet, @dylandkt said he has been assured that Face ID's reliability will not be negatively affected by the under-display change.

I am able to corroborate information regarding a hole punch camera for the pro models of the iPhone 14. Face ID hardware will be placed under the display. As a reassurance to any concerns, the functionality of these sensors have not been negatively affected by this change. — Dylan (@dylandkt) January 6, 2022
Pill shaped is what I am hearing. — Dylan (@dylandkt) January 6, 2022

Apple is rumored to be planning a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max for release in September of this year. The lineup is also expected to include a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, and as of now it appears that these models will continue to have a notch, with a pill-shaped camera cutout limited to Pro models.

Last year, @dylandkt shared accurate information about products like the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro before they were released.
