A couple of Irish students – Darren Martyn, aged 21, and 20-year-old Donncha O’Cearrbhail, both alleged members of the LulzSec group – have admitted hacking into the website of the Fine Gael Irish political party back in January 2011.
Martyn and O’Cearrbhail have pleaded guilty to defacing the website and leaking its database, The Independent informs.
The attacked website, finegael2011.ie, was set up for the 2011 election campaign and held the contact details of around 2,000 individuals. At the time, the site was taken offline for 24 hours and according to the party’s representatives, it cost €10,000 ($13,000) to repair the damages caused by the hackers.
The Director of Public Prosecutions agreed for the two to be tried at district court level if they pleaded guilty.
The United States demanded the extradition of Martyn and O’Cearrbhail after the FBI charged the members of the LulzSec group.
