According to my review, they still need improvement, but they are much better then previous versions.

ESET's primary focus is on standard instead of zero-day protection. This is ESET's official statement, not mine.
Kaspersky has better zero-day protection. It has more protection features than ESET.
ESET Smart Security 9 is improved and includes botnets shield, exploit blocker and defense against vulnerabilities. The exploit blocker protects against zero-day attacks: browser, PDF reader, mail client and MS Office components, while the defense improves detection of network vulnerability.
What is the best ?
Eset: the engine is found vulnerable to an attack that allows outside read any file on the affected machine.

ESET's protection capabilities are wise at all however due to being so dependent on their numerous algorithm, a possible bypass may occur easily which why your backup plan will be the HIPS feature. Other concepts are just run at the background to check the possible malicious threats.
