Is there any custom settings for Windows Defender Max Protection?@Umbra

I think you have to add the registry key to enable PUP protection. Bitdefender Free is not a bad choice, but you have to test it yourself to see if it slows down your system. Bitdefender online forum support is dead, so if you encounter any issues, you have to solve it by yourself. I have used Bitdefender Free over a year now, and I only encountered one issue that Bitdefender solved within a day or two.

Yes bitdefender free offers a strong protection, but it can make some trouble with windows updates.

But its really hard to replace Avast with another light av...my first thought was eset nod32 or avira pro.

I don't like the defender..the advanced settings should be easier activated in the gui and not with extern tools or registry edits...

Bitdefender already fixed issue with Windows Update a long time ago. I have no issue at all on my 2 PC with Bitdefender Free installed the last 2 Windows updates.

WD is light, it's built-in. And ConfigureDefender makes WD easy to use, it's home user-friendly. I will admit its full scan is painfully slow, but comprehensive. Add one of the other layers mentioned above and you're good to go.

It's a very very bad alternative for Avast(just better web filtering)but the pro version would good.if you don't trust Chinese you must avoid Avira.they are in partnership with 360! I have trust on 360 but do you trust them?
Avira SafeThings™ - IoT Security for the Connected Home
Avira has an ok privacy policy but you cant never make sure if they share smth with them or no.

Im not an Av tester but I think It's much better than Avira free.
BD free has everything but not multilayer ransomware protection/firewall and the sigs are always behind the paid version(according to Evjl's Rain)
Bitdefender free+smart screen+nvt erp+secure DNS would be enough
recently I use this DNS :Verisign Public DNS Offers DNS Stability And Security – Verisign
Very fast and secure.

Honestly , for those believing in test labs , let me remind you something:

1- tests labs use hundreds of samples.
2- the difference rate on the results between tested AVs are less than 2%, the worst score like 97-98% the best 100%

Now putting this in real life:

1- an Average Joe user surfing normally (aka not looking for cracks/keygen, etc...) will barely encounter more than 10 malware a year...and most of them won't be 0-days. I use computers since decades, i only encountered 3 malware while surfing LOL.
2- now using the test labs results , the 2% difference is equal to ? 0.2 malware.

So are you seriously spending 30$ a year for a 0.2 extra detection while Windows Defender is free, built-in the OS alongside other security mechanisms, compatible with ALL apps (so no breakage of any sort), and easy to use?

Now if you want strong 0-days protection (because you have risky habits or you are paranoid), this is another story and you will be better using softs with some preventive mechanisms (sandbox, HIPS, BB, anti-exe, SRPs , etc...).
