I thought I would be using Ubuntu as my host by now, but long story short, I haven't been using it in a VM as often as I should have. It won't be long from now till I am duel-booting Ubuntu with Windows. But I was wondering, would it be safe to use tor on my Ubuntu machine? Note that on the same computer, it would be dual-booting Windows. But I do plan to sandbox tor browser. I might even connect to a VPN before connecting to tor. I won't be doing anything illegal, just browsing the deep web. Would this be safe?

You must use a vpn if you are going to browse the deep web just for your own safety!!!

No, you are not required too. Considering Tor currently takes 3 hops, your IP, and other sensitive information is well protected. Using Tor is generally no different than using the actual surface network.

If you need a better understanding of what 'Tor' actually is I highly suggest watching this video:

Granted, but for peace of mind a vpn should be used!
One example would be if you try torrenting through Tor your ip will be visible.
