There is Huawei gear installed all over the place that is & isn't badged, some in quite sensitive areas, frankly it's closing the stable door - Some of the gear has been installed in areas few people ever go apart from maintenance people. Nothing illegal has been done but it's a bit late now. There will still be re-badging anyway.
Chinese manufacturing is a threat to the national security of other nations. It has been known world-wide for decades. These types of counter-measures are long overdue.
I'm sure someone will get offended by that statement, but that's not it's intent. Just think about it... it's just not good common sense to have 99 % of digital production come out of single nation. I mean, come on, how stupid and irresponsible can nations be to allowed themselves to be put into this situation ?
Anyway, in this particular case the real issue are the network vulnerabilities.

I wouldn't say it was dumb per se. Governments all over the globe need to protect what is theirs from falling into the wrong hands.
Totally agree with @HarborFront though, all nations are embroiled in this "my daddy is bigger than your daddy game" but who wins ? My guess is nobody.

Although the name of a specific manufacturer was not declared, it seems that the telecommunications company announced that 'We will stop selling hardware made in China even for consumer use'.
At this point I think it has become a useless game which will not brings nothing constructive.

Look at what China is doing in the South China Sea. Creating island military bases by pumping/pouring billions of gallons of sand, denying international waters free travel, claiming by force that the South China Sea belongs to them. Crazy stuff.

I agree with you, but I don't see how an international company can stay competitive by paying Americans high wages, high healthcare, dealing with unions, and liability issues...etc. China has legalized slave labor.
Well all these countries following suit doesn't seem to be an exercise for lemmings, there is a track record when it comes to Chinese electronics. We can recall Superfish/Lenovo, how about this suspicious finding back in 2015? So, the Huawei nightmare seems in line with that.
Blame your gov for vampire-feeding on you with incessant taxes for everything.
Sure most taxes are needed for developing infrastructures, but does a country needs super stealth bombers that cost billions, super spying satellites networks, etc...
In France, we are not geniuses but we managed to give free full healthcare for the less rich since decades. Sure we don't have an armada of nukes, plane carriers, satellites, etc...
Most of all, we don't blindly let our gov do what it wants.

We prob spend most of our defense $$ in black programs (cough, $ unaccounted for). Creating alien spacecrafts, laser weapons, and anti gravity devices...haha
