I set the application monitor to untrusted, which is the same as blocked in comodo, so unknown applications are then blocked from running. I also go into settings, threats and exclusions and check the box next to 'other' I've set the file antivirus to scan all files and set the heuristics to deep scan, but the 2 settings that I believe really matter are: setting the application monitor to untrusted and checking the 'other' box under threats and exclusions.

Application Monitor is the one of strongest component for Kaspersly when set to untrusted caused even zero day have no ability to execute.

Unlike low and high restricted have the possibility to bypass since its based for heuristics analysis.

And what about the list of (known) safe programs? Is it big enough so that KIS won't become irritating blocking unknown safe applications?

As possible the whitelist for Kaspersky could be enough for most common used aoftware but their "Application Control" tends to check always to make sure non legitimate application blocked.

I just read on a Wilders thread that Kaspersky are removing the advanced settings in this version.

Well a basic view is that most users are not touching the advance settings thus removed however its like a major downfall for Kaspersky. They could focus on optimum protection when its default.

I agree!
Stripping away the "advanced settings" in the 2014 version will turn many people away.Focusing more on "performance" enhancements would have been a better option.

I will go back to comodo if kaspersky take away the advance settings.
