It was one of the most chilling security breaches you’d ever witness: a celebrated hacker effortlessly gleaning customer login details to a bank account held with one of Australia’s big four — in an instant.
That’s just one step from perhaps pinching someone’s life savings or at least hundreds of thousands of dollars if it’s kept accessible online. Sure, the computer he used was already compromised, but, as you’ll see, achieving that was child’s play.
It showed that the fancy keyboards we use for logging into some online bank accounts won’t necessarily stop you being robbed if your computer is infected by a skilled hacker.
It further emphasises the need for us all to adopt two factor or biometric authentication for such accounts.
