Hello Khylaria and welcome :) You need to uninstall either Avast or Microsoft security essentials, running 2 real time AV's is just asking for trouble. I would also consider adding emsisoft emergency kit as an ondemand scanner & You could consider adding lastpass. You could also add Emet. What do you use for backup?

I put any important files or programs on an external drive, so that if I have to use my Windows 7 disk for recovery/repair/reinstall, I won't lose anything I really need.

As for the thing about multiple real-time AV's, I've seen malware slip by one but get caught by another. If push comes to shove, I can try to set one as real-time and use the other for on-demand. And on second look, apparently I got rid of MSE already - chalk it up to a "d'oh!" moment that I included it in the list.

I'll definitely take a look at the programs you mentioned, though!

Hello,

It can be done to have 2 AV's running at once, (just ask Umbra) but as ZeroDay said it is asking for trouble.

You must use other extenstion than the ones you have there for Chrome and Firefox?

Ones that I highly recommend, for Chrome and for Firefox;
  • Adblock Plus
  • Lastpass
  • No Script (Firefox)
  • WOT (it is not needed, but some users really like this software)
  • HTTPS Everywhere (Firefox)

Welcome, I would scrap Spybot Search and Destroy, it's becoming more obsolete as other vendors like Malwarebytes take over.

Even though Avast has an Auto-Sandbox, it's not the greatest when running downloading and executing unknown programs from the web and emails etc. Remember you can turn on PUP-detection for Avast in each of the Shield settings, I think it's under Sensitivity.

Optionally, the browsers. IE10 for Windows 7 and Firefox both require an additional download for Adobe Flash Player, which either you let it run in the background to update, or you manual updates. A few extra resources running in the background. Remember to uninstall Java or other plugins (ie. Silverlight etc) from the Control Panel, if not in use or required. Silverlight updates can be hidden from Windows Updates.

In IE10, I prefer to use the TPL for Adblocking here:

To add to McLovin's post, HTTPS Everywhere is available for Chrome and other browsers.

Last thing, I recommend AdBlock over the more popular ABP. AdBlock doesn't have a pre-defined white-list of Ads.
