The upcoming 2022 iPhone lineup will feature two 6.1-inch devices and two 6.7-inch devices, with no mini-sized 5.4-inch ‌iPhone‌, well-respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a note to investors that was seen by MacRumors. Two of the iPhones will be high-end models and two of the iPhones will be lower-end models, similar to the current iPhone 12 lineup.

Apple introduced the 5.4-inch ‌iPhone‌ mini in the ‌iPhone 12‌ lineup and plans to continue to sell a 5.4-inch device in 2021, but it looks like the size will be discontinued after that, if Kuo's information is accurate. The iPhone 12 mini has not been selling as well as expected, according to multiple iPhone sales estimates.

Along with streamlining size options, Kuo believes that Apple will introduce significant camera upgrades in the 2022 iPhones, adding a 48-megapixel camera in the high-end ‌iPhone‌ 14 models. Kuo says that the upgraded camera lens will take ‌iPhone‌ camera photography "to a new level."

Apple may include an under the screen Touch ID sensor for some models of the 2022 iPhones, according to credible Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In an investor note today obtained by MacRumors, Kuo says that Apple plans to have four models in the 2022 iPhone lineup. Kuo had previously stated that the iPhone 13, destined for this year, will be the last iPhone lineup to feature a 5.4-inch “mini” size. Kuo reaffirmed his belief today, stating that the 2022 iPhones will only feature a 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch size, with two models of each size.

The low-end 6.7-inch iPhone may cost less than $900 but could lack certain features such as an under the screen Touch ID sensor to compensate for costs. The current largest 6.7-inch iPhone, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, begins at $1,099.

Providing some details about the camera improvements coming to the 2022 iPhones, Kuo says the high-end 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch iPhones will feature an improved wide-angle camera with 48 megapixels.

iphone-13-lineup-dummy-models.jpg

New alleged dummy models of the upcoming iPhone 13, shared by leaker Sonny Dickson on Twitter, depict a repositioned camera bump on the standard ‌iPhone 13‌ and ‌iPhone 13‌ mini, while the camera bump on the highest-end model is "slightly larger."

The dummy models line up with ‌iPhone 13‌ schematics previously seen by MacRumors, which showed that the upcoming iPhones will feature a thicker overall design and larger camera bumps. The larger and thicker camera bumps could be a result of the rumored inclusion of sensor-shift stabilization for the entire lineup. The highest-end Pro and Pro Max are also rumored to feature upgraded Ultra Wide cameras.

We're just a few months away from when Apple is expected to reveal the 2021 iPhone, dubbed the "iPhone 13." In preparation for its launch, it has been pulling in shipments of different components needed to produce the new iPhones, according to a report from DigiTimes.

In years past, Apple released its latest ‌iPhone‌ lineup, alongside a new Apple Watch, during a September event at Apple Park. Due to the global health crisis last year, the company was forced to delay the launch of the iPhone 12 to October, one month off its typical release schedule. Despite the delay last year, Apple is expected to launch the new iPhones on time in September, according to well-respected Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Apple operates under dozens of suppliers based in China, the United States, Vietnam, and India to produce its devices. Lockdowns crippled many of Apple's supplier's ability to produce and assemble devices. TSMC, one of Apple's largest suppliers, has reportedly already started producing the A15 chip for the 2021 iPhone.

Apple has reportedly now selected five separate component suppliers to allow the forthcoming "iPhone 13" range to include the faster mmWave 5G in more territories.

All iPhone 12 models include 5G, but only those sold in the US come with the significantly faster mmWave version. Now buyers in at least some more international countries can expect mmWave in the forthcoming "iPhone 13" range, as Apple steps up its component orders.

According to Digitimes, Apple is now said to have placed orders with Austria-based manufacturer AT&S. The company has previously supplied Apple with mainboards and SiPs (System in Package) for the iPhone, and will now produce AiP (Antenna in Package) for the 5G models.

iphone-13-wireless-charging-coil.jpeg

Apple plans to include a "slightly bigger" wireless charging coil in this year's iPhone 13 lineup, which will not only yield improved heat management and higher wattage, but could be paving the way towards reverse wireless charging, according to a new rumor from Max Weinbach (via EverythingApplePro).

According to the rumor, Apple plans to make the physical wireless charging coil in this upcoming iPhone larger, which would increase the surface area of where wireless charging can be induced. Weinbach had previously reported that the 2021 iPhones will feature stronger MagSafe magnets, which in today's rumor, he reiterates could be a reason behind the increased coil size.

Weinbach also speculates that the increased coil size could be used for reverse wireless charging, which would enable users to charge wireless charging compatible devices, such as AirPods, by placing them on the back of the ‌iPhone‌.

The upcoming 2021 iPhone will be named "iPhone 13" with the naming scheme of "mini," "Pro," and "Pro Max" variants for the entire lineup, according to the Economic Daily News.

According to the report, citing sources and "supply chain" checks, Apple plans to market the upcoming iPhones as the "‌iPhone 13‌." Furthermore, the report says that Apple will stick with the "mini," "Pro," and "Pro Max" terms for the different variants, all set to launch in September.

From the report (machine translation):
Apple's new ‌iPhone‌ this year has entered the countdown stage of stocking, and the supply chain has reported that this year's new phone will be named ‌iPhone 13‌. In the assembly order allocation, Hon Hai (2317) is still the big winner, including all orders for the top 6.7-inch ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro Max. , 68% of the 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 13‌ is also handled by Hon Hai, and about 60% of the orders for the 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro are also taken by Hon Hai, assisting Hon Hai in the second half of the peak season camp.

According to the supply chain, this year’s new ‌iPhone‌ will return to the situation announced in September of the previous year. The foundry will start shipping in the third quarter, and the peak of the pull will fall in the fourth quarter. Apple will launch four new models, namely the 6.7-inch ‌iPhone 13‌. Pro Max, 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 13‌ Pro, and 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch models, also named ‌iPhone 13‌.

Taiwanese Apple supplier Pegatron will remain a major assembler of smaller iPhones and will share orders for this year's forthcoming iPhone 13 mini with Foxconn, claims a new report from DigiTimes.

Pegatron has obtained orders for the upcoming 5.4-inch iPhone model, as well as a portion of orders for another upcoming ‌iPhone‌ model that will feature a 6.1-inch display, according to market sources.
This year's ‌iPhone 13‌ mini is expected to be the last 5.4-inch model that Apple will offer in its flagship lineup, owing to poor sales, according to reliable sources. Apple does not plan to introduce a 5.4-inch ‌iPhone‌ 14 mini, with the mini line ending after the ‌iPhone 13‌.

According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple in 2022 will instead offer two 6.1-inch iPhones and two 6.7-inch iPhones, so both the standard ‌iPhone‌ 14 and the ‌iPhone‌ 14 Pro will be available in those two size options.

Pegatron is Apple's second-largest ‌‌iPhone‌‌ assembler after Foxconn, and in February spent $14.2 million to buy land rights for building a factory in Chennai, India. The outlay followed a proposal approved in late 2020 by its board of directors to spend $150 million on building its first ‌‌iPhone‌‌ manufacturing plant in the country.

Update: The full report, now released, reveals that both Pegatron and Foxconn will share orders for ‌iPhone 13‌ mini, although Pegatron has seen orders for the smaller form factor ‌iPhone‌ reduce significantly this year due to lower-than-expected sales of the iPhone 12 mini.

While Pegatron is also likely to land a small portion of the orders for the standard 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 13‌ model in the new ‌iPhone‌ lineup, Foxconn will remain the primary assembler for the entire 2021 ‌iPhone‌ series. China-based Luxshare will also become one of Apple's ‌iPhone‌ production partners this year, according to DigiTimes' sources.

Apple is looking to boost initial production of this year's iPhone 13 models to 90 million units through the end of the year, an increase of up to 20% over the 75 million units of the iPhone 12 series produced last year, according to Bloomberg's Debby Wu and Mark Gurman.

The report also outlines a number of expectations for the ‌iPhone 13‌ series, most of which have already been rumored:
  • Same four sizes as the current lineup
  • September announcement
  • At least one model with LTPO display to enable variable refresh rate
  • Smaller notch
  • Camera upgrades will focus on video, including improved optical zoom
  • Upgraded chip based on same 6-core design as current A14
  • No in-display Touch ID, although Apple did test the technology for the ‌iPhone 13‌
In addressing the smaller notch on the ‌iPhone 13‌, Bloomberg says that while Apple's goal is to ultimately remove the notch entirely, it looks like even the 2022 iPhone will still include one. It is, however, likely to be reduced further in size compared to the ‌iPhone 13‌'s notch.

The iPhone 13 set to launch later this year will feature the improved WiFi 6E protocol, offering users access to an extended version of the WiFi 6 framework with the added benefit of a 6GHz band, according to DigiTimes.

Apple introduced WiFi 6 with the iPhone 11 in 2019, and compared to the previous WiFi 5 framework, WiFi 6 offers significantly improved speeds and security. WiFi 6E adds minimal changes compared to WiFi 6 except for an added 6GHz band, which will result in increased bandwidth and less interference for devices that support Wi-Fi 6E.

DigiTimes says that as Apple plans to include the newer framework in this year's flagship model, it will slowly become the standard for iOS and Android devices next year, despite only being announced early last year.

Apple plans to update the iPhone SE, its 4.7-inch entry-level iPhone, with an updated A14 Bionic processor from the iPhone 12 series in the first half of next year, according to a report from DigiTimes.

DigiTimes' report follows in the footsteps of reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who reported last month the ‌iPhone SE‌ would receive an updated processor and 5G capabilities in the first half of 2022. Kuo says the new ‌iPhone SE‌, which has marketed well for customers looking for smaller handsets, will be the "cheapest 5G iPhone ever" and is hoped to bolster Apple's position in the increasingly competitive 5G market.

The ‌iPhone SE‌ was originally released in March of 2016 as a small entry-level ‌iPhone‌ to replace the ‌iPhone‌ 5S, released three years earlier. Apple updated the ‌iPhone‌ for the first time in April of last year with the A13 Bionic processor borrowed from the iPhone 11, a larger screen, a new design, and improved cameras. According to reports, the upcoming ‌iPhone SE‌ 3 will sport fewer changes, featuring only the improved A14 Bionic processor and 5G.

The ‌iPhone SE‌ is the only ‌iPhone‌ within Apple's current lineup that features a Touch ID sensor and a Home Button, and that design will continue with the ‌iPhone SE‌ 3 next year, according to DigiTimes and ‌Ming-Chi Kuo‌. Looking further out, Apple is reportedly planning to redesign the iPhone SE with a punch-hole screen design rather than a notch in 2023.

An apparent supply chain leak is corroborating rumors that Apple's higher-end "iPhone 13" models could be offered in new colors like "sunset gold," matte black, and a pale rose gold.

The information was posted on a Korean-language message board by leaker Ranzuk. Citing a Chinese supply chain source, the post claims that Apple's "iPhone 13 Pro" will be offered in four colors: black, silver, rose gold, and sunset gold.

According to the post, the sunset gold color will have a "bronze feel," while the rose gold "looks very pale."

These new color options will likely only apply to the higher-end "iPhone 13 Pro" models. Currently, the iPhone 12 Pro. is offered in graphite, silver, gold, and Pacific Blue. In all likelihood, the mid-range "iPhone 13" models will continue to come in a variety of colorful hues.

Analysts Wedbush have repeated a claim that there will be a 1TB iPhone 13 storage tier, despite a contradictory report by TrendForce.

Wedbush first made the claim back in February that this year’s iPhone line-up would push beyond the current maximum 512GB storage capacity …

Wedbush today said that supply chain checks suggest that the next generation iPhone lineup, colloquially referred to as iPhone 13, will feature a 1 TB high-end storage option for the first time […]

Apple has currently only offered 1 TB of storage on its high-end iPad Pro tablets.

Not so, said TrendForce last month.

For those who were expecting a 1TB option of storage, TrendForce says Apple is expected to maintain the same memory capacities as the iPhone 12 line.

But Wedbush today insists its supply-chain sources support the 1TB claim.

From a spec perspective, we have increased confidence that iPhone 13 will have a 1 terabyte storage option which is double from the highest Pro storage capacity today (512GB) and will also include a number of enhancements with Lidar across all iPhone 13 models.
