Hello LawnTractor,
Real-time protection
Like MalMan said you could use Avast on your PC as well. Personally though I do think Avast is better then MSE, for the reason is that the detection rate is high with Avast and you have a lot more settings that you can use in Avast compared to MSE.

Browser protection

It's essentials to know as much as possible about the web pages that you are visiting, in order to avoid different type of attacks.
I would recommend that you install a site advisor like Web of Trust which will greatly help you, while online.
WOT (Free) - link
To help you avoid malicious sites you can use Web of Trust (WOT) a website rating browser plugin. After you add it to your browser make sure you only visit websites rated "Green" by WOT

You can also add a password manager for your browser, which should make your life on the internet a lot more safer and easier.
LastPass (Free) - link
LastPass is an online password manager and form filler that makes web browsing easier and more secure

Virtualization:
Even if you submitted a file to virustotal.com and it said that it's clean , you'll need to run it in virtual environment because sometimes infection can be so new that security vendors don't have signs for it.

Virtualization software will allow you to browse the web or run another application in a completely safe environment. This is especially useful when visiting high-risk web sites, whether accidentally or deliberately, as the Web browser will be completely contained within the virtual enviroment, preventing any damage to your computer.
A sandbox can also be used to run any other applications which you think may be suspect - you can run the program inside the sandbox to determine whether or not it is safe while remaining completely protected against any malicious actions that it may try to carry out.
I strongly advise you to install Sandboxie and use it when you're browsing the Internet or running shady/unknown programs.
Alternately you can try BufferZone PRO (Free) , another great virtualization software.

Sandboxie (Free/Paid) - link
Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer.

Always run suspicious of freshly downloaded files in a Sandboxie to verify that he download isn't compromised!Sandboxie will replicate perfectly your operating system so all the files should run without any problems in it.

Backup:
Since you don't have a backup I thought I might give you a couple of suggestions.

For some reason, Avast icon on the task bar vanishes w/o any reason, and then clicking on the desktop icon just give pop-up saying Avast isn't able to open because it's stopped working. I've reloaded the thing several times with the same results, it works for a day or two but then the same endless loop happens...finally gave up. This just started with the new Avast "update" that was sent through this week.
LoginCode is my pasword manager.
WOT installs with a toolbar on IE9.
I do have a back-up disk, though. Forgot to put that in conf.
16 years on the net without a virus/malware.
Enjoy your reviews - you did the MSE w/IE9 review for me on YouTube.

Why not use avast on your PC too?
IE9 All I can recommend is WOT.
How is your UAC?

UAC is on.
Avast taskbar icon kept vanishing with this latest "update" sent out this week.
WOT leaves a toolbar.
Cheers.

Well if avast doesn't work there are two other free solutions that I would recommend instead of MSE.
  1. AVG Free Edition
  2. Panda Cloud Anti-Virus Free

Or if you don't want to leave MSE I would recommend Kingsoft Antivirus 2012 (Free) or MalwareBytes Pro ($25)

I think you could run PrivateFirewall all alone and be OK.
I thought about Kingsoft but it's scores on VB100 were pretty eye-opening.:s
Cheers

Don't rely too much on Lab's tests.
Just try for a while those that attract you. if none satisfies you, you may invest in Sandboxie (paid version) and learn to use it, so you can replace an AV.

Changed config:
Just switched back to Avast! 7 Free, hope they fixed the disappearing icon problem.

Due to problems with Avast, switched to Kingsoft - no conflicts with any other software - running with PrivateFirewall.

What problems you experienced with avast?

Have you considered AVG Free?

Doesn't play well w/PrivateFirewall, still has vanishing icon problem on taskbar. Will keep Kingsoft (Avira engine) unless there's a problem, good so far, though. Cheers.
