I'm considering migrating from ubuntu to Mint. Goodness knows how I ended up on Ubuntu, I first moved to linux about five years ago and I installed Debian (didn't like it), and then Ubuntu (probably the only two live CDs I had to hand)...

Anyway, I'm fed up with Ubuntu, looking for a change and after advising some people to change to Mint, I'm now considering making the switch myself.

Any advice?

Mint Cinnamon or Mate
Strongly suggested. Very stable and fast (comparing it to Windows or Ubuntu). Pretty customizable and feature rich.

ok you can as well as mint has some good collections of drivers which ubuntu do not, becoz why i am saying this confidently is i used mint as well as ubuntu for almost 1 and 1/2 years so, hardware detection and drivers compatibility more and flexible in mint compare to ubuntu, ok may something differ now, anyway this is my two cents.

I heard good feedbacks about LM, both here and on a local site. I started with Mandriva, what I'm using now is Ubuntu compatible (since 2010). Maybe it's time for me to switch too.

I had to hack a lot of stuff to work with Ubuntu, so the hardware compatibility with Mint sounds good.

Will have to look up the differences between Cinnamon and Mate, have any of you tried both and got a favourite, and why? :p

I have tried them both. MATE is much more customizable and mature than Cinnamon.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I'm leaning more towards MATE at the moment :)

I use Mint Cinnamon and I personally think it's great! It runs very smooth and looks great. You could just try Both Cinnamon and MATE and see which you prefer. Good luck either way.

Mint is basically ubuntu "with a shell" Some say a more polished ubuntu.. Mint is running a couple versions behind with the kernel version, which on older systems would be ok, but newer systems, some have issues with, such as mine and a CPU throttle control issue leading to a warm experience, that gradually ceased after upgrading a few versions up stream of the kernel.. Mint does have nice tools like mintstick, ect, but in the end, i switched back to ubuntu as it just runs better for every day use, at least this i say, from experience on my machine. It is hard saying which would be better on yours, without an experiment ;) :)

damn , he ninja me :D

Mint Mate was my first distro , then i switched to Kubuntu (ubuntu + KDE) , for the reasons Illumination mentioned, ubuntu can get everything that Mint has.

Mint is just more complete out-of-the-box, and needs less works.
