Hey peeps.

I just startet studying computer, more precisely networking including cisco and some programming in C#. Since i am going to learn using linux later, I thought that I just could start right away, i bought a VPS and is looking for some things to learn, any nice ideas? i am open for everything.

Thoughts so far:
installing and setting up webserver, vpn (openvpn), mailserver, ftp etc.

Sounds like a great idea what you are doing. One of the main OS that I used when playing around was Windows Server, but also played around with OpenSUSE. Well to get toy started you could start by doing what you said you were going to do which was intall a webserver.

Would you be doing stuff where you have connect computer to a network and what not? and with programming in C# I'm not the best with that, but it's basically things to do with python.
 
Since you will be working with Networking I suggest you take a look at OS made for networking, in other words server. From what I have seen RedHat seems to be on of the best Linux OS made for servers. Ubuntu has on as well. Black Track might also have something to offer, especially attack other; They offer training how to defend against attacks.

Ubuntu Server - I thin it's for free but I am not sure.

RedHat Server - One of the best Linux OS for servers.

Back Track OS - My favorite; I love it's UI and forces the user to learn Linux.

Yea, i have used ubuntu and debian before. Just tried CentOS, its low on resources but i am going back to ubuntu :)
Just have some problems with learning the terminal since its a non-graphical :)
 
We use Oracle Linux 6 @ work, there are many free distro's so just match the one that works best for you.
